Personal Statement Readers 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Bearby: Content, grammar, cohesiveness, "hook," basically anything you want. Be warned that I can be blunt when it comes to poor grammar.

TheEvilShoe: content, cohesiveness/flow, efficient sentence length (have to make the best use of every character!), general strength or "wow" factor of essay. If I notice grammar mistakes I will correct those as well, however my strong suit is definitely more making an essay "pop".

twelvetigers: I look at content, try and make sure you're talking about neat stuff and not just listing what you have done. I might notice grammar, too. Just my opinions, really.

nuevaburra: Grammar, spelling sentence structure, punctuation, word usage - I will use a machete to hack through bad grammar! Can also comment on content.

goldnretrivrgrl: Will mostly comment on content, as well as glaring spelling/grammar/punctuation issues. Proper comma usage seems to be a real problem for most people. I will make corrections but I won't utterly destroy your self esteem, I promise. After May 14th is better!

heylodeb: content/ ease of reading. I will notice obvious grammar issues if present. My first application I wrote an awful PS (unknowingly - bad content) and this time around my personal statement was one of my strong points. (2 out of state interviews and an acceptance at my in state) I learned a lot from my mistakes and will be happy to help others not make them

BakersDozen: grammer/content/flow, editor type stuff! Can also comment on content.

Ricegrad: grammar/spelling, content, cohesiveness/flow, sentence structure (no passive voice!). I like to track changes too- that way you can see my suggestion, and yet feel free to ignore it!

LetItSnow: Former newspaper writer/editor. I work best with beer. I'll bring a 40-something view to the picture. Only have time for a few, but willing to do the first handful that contact me. Willing to share mine.

psilovethomas: anything the microsoft word editing function will not catch. Tense, word order, sentence structure and cohesiveness. I will almost always make recommendations on how to improve your essay. I will tell you if your essay sucks, so be thick skinned.

HopefulAg: Whatever needs done. I'm a self-described fantastic grammar and spelling nazi. I also get wrapped up in how things are said (vs what they're saying) because I think it makes a difference (though it probably doesn't): in other words, readability and content. Willing to review all summer and dependent on free-time when school starts up again.

that redhead: I'll read it and I'll comment where I see necessary.

EllieGirl89: I will read and edit but PLEASE proofread before sending it. I don't mind fixing the occasional spelling or grammar mistake, but when a paper is riddled with them and it could have been prevented just be reading it over once yourself, that drives me a little batty. I am good with the overall big picture, sentence structure and semantics, and general paper flow. Willing to share my PS.

thedogisgreen: I'll cover it in red using the tracker in Microsoft Word - grammar (though do some proofing before you send it!), flow, conciseness, readability. Willing to share my PS once you have a first draft. Pretty free through mid-May and then the first two weeks of August - I can edit during the summer in between also, but won't be as quick to get back to you.

hunterjumper12 - grammer/content/"hook"/pretty much all aspects. Please proofread before you send it to me though! Pretty free all summer, although it might take a day or two for me to get it back to you

SouthJerseyBell - Help "selling" yourself, highlighting your experiences, sentence structure and flow, creating a story. I am NOT good for spelling! I am willing to share my PS, applied for two years and got great suggestions from the first year and great responses for my second app (including 4 acceptances, all OOS/international).

Tuckervet: I will check for spelling and grammar mistakes, and offer suggestions regarding content/flow/ overall impressions. I do not know the secret of getting into vet school or writing a perfect essay, but I am willing to give my opinions and you can take them as you will. I will give suggestions and am happy to work with you on editing, but will not rewrite it for you because your PS is not supposed to be in my words. Please make the effort of proof reading it at least once - if it is coming up wrong on my spell-check, it showed up on yours. Although I think it is incredibly early to be working on them already, I am ready to read them anytime you're ready, just PM me about it and I'll give you my e-mail address to send the actual essay.

whyevernot55: Another grammar nazi here - I was an English major the first time around and have worked for magazines and newspapers. Will edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, general flow/sentence structure, etc. I'll also offer any insights on content that I feel able to.

jumphigherlivie: Grammer, punctuation, content, wow factor, shortening it up (I'm happy to help you cut down characters ... but pls don't send a 10,000 character document and ask me to help chop it to 5,000). I wont go out of my way to be cruel, but I will tell it to you like it is (in my opinion anyways). I've also served as a member of the admissions committees for my PhD program.

sooprnova: I'll look at nuts and bolts like grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. I edited theses for spare cash while in college. I'll also help with content, temporal issues, and character count. I spent many years reviewing resumes and cover letters, so I can also let you know if your PS is engaging and something that someone is likely to read from start to finish.

DP2011: I can do grammar/punctuation/spelling if you need it, but I can help better with word choice, sentence structure, and flow. I'll also review the hook and content if you'd like (let me know where you're applying so I can give some school-specific feedback). I've also been a member of the admissions committees for my PhD program. Edits or just comments.
I can be as merciless as you need... but always constructive.

Sorry, totally new here. How would I send you guys my PS?

Just removing myself from the list.... if I am or have already worked with you, feel free to continue to send me revisions, but I'm not taking new peeps. Sorry!

Darn it, LIS! I waited too long to chek with you.🙁 I am a nontrad too and was thinking about another's opinion.

Teach me to wait!

Aww. How passive aggressive and sweet of you guys to delete me.

Anyhow.. I've already proofed about 6-8, had some great discussions and I've still got a few more weeks til' I get busy again.

Fire em' at me.

Non-trad, former creative-writing student/author. I'll proof your theme, wording and general awful:good ratio.

^^^Dude, like 4 people got deleted, it's not always about you. Happens on every list thread on this forum ever. 🙄

Anyway I updated the list to remove people who wanted to be removed and re-added the 4 of you that got lopped off.

Bearby: Content, grammar, cohesiveness, "hook," basically anything you want. Be warned that I can be blunt when it comes to poor grammar.

withoutane: general grammar etc. (I used to be a copy editor for my school newspaper so...). I also asked a lot of vets to edit and comment on my personal statement last year so I know what to include, what to reword, etc. to help you come across as passionate about vet med instead of insincere (really easy to do, btw).

Dsmoody23
: Soul-crushing document review. I will humiliate and degrade your personal statement. I will read your words and give you the absolute worst-case scenario review. Not for the faint of heart.

AHorseOffCourse: Content, advising where you can chop characters to fit inside the required length (trust me, you'll need this). I'm blunt and honest but not mean. My pet peeves are passive voice, wordiness (using 5 words to say something that 1 word will suffice for), too many's "that's" and starting all your sentences with the same word ("I've" for example). I'm fairly well versed in various literary devices/creative devices that will help the structure/interest of the essay. I'll have time to look at PS's 5/16/11-8/10/11. I'm better at looking at 2nd and third drafts than final drafts (ie - write it, revise it 1-2x, and then send it to me) unless you are looking for where to chop characters - in that case final drafts are fine. I'm also more than willing to share my PS - SDNer's is there usually a thread for this? Don't pm PSs to me, use my e-mail. It's my user name at gmail.

savethewhales: grammar/spelling//content/flow I will make sure you are conveying what vet med means to you and why you should be accepted. I want to help you sell yourself while being authentic and honest. My history includes a lot of employee hiring in both the veterinary and animal care businesses so I know what I would look for in an animal person

Armymutt25A
: I won't edit, but will mark up and make suggestions. I'm an Army officer, and I write like one. If you are into flowery language, then I'm not your editor. I will give advice on how to fit the most meaningful content into the smallest space possible. I also check for grammer, spelling, etc. I have the next two weeks off, so if you have something, send it over. I'll also be off all of June and July, and if I'm not in the middle of moving, I'll check some essays. Not limited to PS, but if you have an essay, please send me the question. Oh yeah, I'm possibly a tad nicer than Dsmoody...possibly.

kaydubs: Normal grammatorial editing stuffs, comments on content, cohesiveness/coherence of points. I will try not to be too critical but I tend to be honest. Take that as you will. Start sending whenever you want (already edited some drafts for people). Please keep in mind, you will be editing at least a few times if not more. (I tend to prefer emailed ones so I can track changes in Word. My liberal arts education has 'ruined' me in a sense). I will share my PS, but take it as a grain of salt.

Bacci: Like others, I'm also a grammar/spelling nazi. I'm also good at flow and transitions. Anyone can PM me whenever they'd like. I usually check SDN daily. I prefer emailed in MS Word as well so I (and you!) can easily track changes. I am also willing to share my own personal statement if you feel it would help.

PreVetBeaver
: I will edit whatever you would like me too. I can edit grammer, flow, creativity... anything 🙂. You can PM me whenever you would like and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Felixor90: I can do grammar and spelling as well as comment on structure, flow, etc. I got a perfect score on the writing SAT. PM me and I will give you my email where you can send a double-spaced rough or final draft.

lareinesoleil: I am a grammar nazi. So yeah, grammar, spelling, general sentence flow, transitions...if anything jumps out about the content, I'll comment on it, although I probably will mostly edit for grammar and structure.
Just a quick note: my computer can't open .docx files (it's a Mac and I'm too cheap to buy Word), so please send them as .doc instead if you're using Word.
Available: until August.

hintofblue: Will happily comment on anything you need - content, word choice, transitions, etc. I can be as nice or as mean as you'd like, but I will keep it constructive.

whyevernot55: Another grammar nazi here - I was an English major the first time around and have worked for magazines and newspapers. Will edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, general flow/sentence structure, etc. I'll also offer any insights on content that I feel able to.

jumphigherlivie: Grammer, punctuation, content, wow factor, shortening it up (I'm happy to help you cut down characters ... but pls don't send a 10,000 character document and ask me to help chop it to 5,000). nyanko: I don't sugar coat things and I won't nitpick grammar, though spelling & word choice I may. I am pretty easily bored so I'm a good metric of whether your statement is likely to stand out to someone on the low end of the spectrum. Also, my general rule is I will only really help you if you're a regular contributor here - non-trads and reapplicants get priority.

I've read through the list, but can't decide who could help me best! I have a once edited PS, and would love someone to go over it for content/a little grammar/and cutting it down. I would love someone who has already gotten into vet school also! I used someone last year and it was a lot of fun working with them and I thought my PS turned out great...Although I didn't get in!

Let me know thanks!

Hey everyone - anyone up for reading my PS? It's still rough and I need to shorten it. Let me know, my email is [email protected]. I'd really appreciate the help and can send it to anyone.

Anyone willing to read over an explanation statement?

Class of 2016 applicant but willing to offer feedback and check grammar. PM me 🙂

Hi, I was wondering if creative writing is frowned upon in personal statements/applications (i.e. using incomplete sentences that help story telling).

I heard grammar and spelling are obviously important things but some of it seems to conflict with creative writing.

Hi, I was wondering if creative writing is frowned upon in personal statements/applications (i.e. using incomplete sentences that help story telling).

I heard grammar and spelling are obviously important things but some of it seems to conflict with creative writing.

This conversation between my husband and I just happened:

Him: You don't need this comma here.
Me: I know, but I want it there.
Him: But it isn't necessary.
Me: It is if I want it to sound the same way in their heads as it does in mine!

I'm big on creative, engaging writing. Personally, if you're able to take some liberties with your writing style and get your point across, you have a leg up on those boring "Ever since I was a little girl I loved kitties" people. 😀 As long as you're not writing some Ulysses-esque personal statement, I think you're okay.

Of course, what do I know? This is my first time applying and my personal statement might be garbage. 😱

Please let me know if any of you are willing to read my personal statement, I don't think it needs a lot of work I just want a second opinion. Please email me if you are willing. Thank you!!
[email protected]

I will be willing to read some personal statements. At some point, eventually, I will have mine done too; if anyone will be willing to read mine (third application, not too worried about the PS, yet😉). If anyone wants me to read theirs just send me a private message and I will let you know what I think.

Guys I'd think that you could message anyone off that list and they'd be willing to review your PS. That's why the list exists.

If they can't anymore, they'll tell you but there's enough people on there that surely out of 5 chosen at random you'll find at least 2 or 3.

What HA said. Bumpity bump bump.

Bearby: Content, grammar, cohesiveness, "hook," basically anything you want. Be warned that I can be blunt when it comes to poor grammar.

twelvetigers: I look at content, try and make sure you're talking about neat stuff and not just listing what you have done. I might notice grammar, too. Just my opinions, really.

nuevaburra: Grammar, spelling sentence structure, punctuation, word usage - I will use a machete to hack through bad grammar! Can also comment on content.

heylodeb: content/ ease of reading.

My history includes a lot of employee hiring in both the veterinary and animal care businesses so I know what I would look for in an animal person

psilovethomas: anything the microsoft word editing function will not catch. Tense, word order, sentence structure and cohesiveness. I will almost always make recommendations on how to improve your essay. I will tell you if your essay sucks, so be thick skinned.

HopefulAg
: Whatever needs done.

Pretty free through mid-May and then the first two weeks of August - I can edit during the summer in between also, but won't be as quick to get back to you.

hunterjumper12
- grammer/content/"hook"/pretty much all aspects.

Armymutt25A
: I won't edit, but will mark up and make suggestions.

I can be as merciless as you need... but always constructive.

nyanko: I don't sugar coat things and I won't nitpick grammar, though spelling & word choice I may. I am pretty easily bored so I'm a good metric of whether your statement is likely to stand out to someone on the low end of the spectrum. Also, my general rule is I will only really help you if you're a regular contributor here - non-trads and reapplicants get priority.

Hey everyone,
I'm just bumping this as a reminder to all you 2016ers. I'm still getting PS proofreading requests despite removing myself from the list. All of you 2016 peeps who are new to the forum- the people on this list below are still open to reading your PS!

I like to track changes too- that way you can see my suggestion, and yet feel free to ignore it!

withoutane: general grammar etc. (I used to be a copy editor for my school newspaper so...). I also asked a lot of vets to edit and comment on my personal statement last year so I know what to include, what to reword, etc. to help you come across as passionate about vet med instead of insincere (really easy to do, btw).

Hey, Just removing myself from the list, getting crazy busy now and I feel bad because I can't give PS reading the attention and patience it needs. Those who have PMed me already I will still read yours and follow ups, so no worries!
Best of Luck to all c/o 2016 applicants!

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and I am also very excited that I found a site like this to help me through my PS! I just recently decided last minute to apply to vet school, so now I am freaking out like all the other applicants.🙂 I have started a rough, rough draft of my PS, but I would like to see if I am even going in the right direction. When I get closer to finishing it I will definitely be PMing some people. For now though, my computer word program only gives me word count, not counting all characters... how can I figure out how many total characters I have used?? Thanks to you all for volunteering your time to help students like us!

Copy it into VMCAS. It will give you a character count.

Hey guys - school starts for me on Monday so I'm off the list. I will finish looking over the ones I have and look at future copies of those I've already commented on! 🙂

So here's the new list!

I want to help you sell yourself while being authentic and honest. My history includes a lot of employee hiring in both the veterinary and animal care businesses so I know what I would look for in an animal person

psilovethomas: anything the microsoft word editing function will not catch. Tense, word order, sentence structure and cohesiveness. I will almost always make recommendations on how to improve your essay. I will tell you if your essay sucks, so be thick skinned.

HopefulAg
: Whatever needs done.

Pretty free through mid-May and then the first two weeks of August - I can edit during the summer in between also, but won't be as quick to get back to you.

hunterjumper12
- grammer/content/"hook"/pretty much all aspects. Please proofread before you send it to me though! Pretty free all summer, although it might take a day or two for me to get it back to you

Armymutt25A
: I won't edit, but will mark up and make suggestions.

I can be as merciless as you need... but always constructive.

nyanko: I don't sugar coat things and I won't nitpick grammar, though spelling & word choice I may. I am pretty easily bored so I'm a good metric of whether your statement is likely to stand out to someone on the low end of the spectrum. Also, my general rule is I will only really help you if you're a regular contributor here - non-trads and reapplicants get priority.

I'm issuing a warning! I will read thru this weekend. After that, only folks that I have read one for previously can ask me to read again, and that will have to work around whatever stuff I'm doing.

And I put things off sometimes, so be patient. 🙂

Is anyone still willing to read over another one. I've had some people look at it but would love more! I've pmed a couple people but they never got back to me... 🙁

Is anyone still willing to read over another one. I've had some people look at it but would love more! I've pmed a couple people but they never got back to me... 🙁

I am available for at least this next week.

Bearby: Content, grammar, cohesiveness, "hook," basically anything you want. Be warned that I can be blunt when it comes to poor grammar.

nuevaburra: Grammar, spelling sentence structure, punctuation, word usage - I will use a machete to hack through bad grammar! Can also comment on content.

BakersDozen: grammer/content/flow, editor type stuff! Can also comment on content.

Ricegrad: grammar/spelling, content, cohesiveness/flow, sentence structure (no passive voice!). I like to track changes too- that way you can see my suggestion, and yet feel free to ignore it!

withoutane: general grammar etc.

Here is me poofing. Bbeventer, still planning on reading it, just had a busy weekend and stuff. And raimes, I sent you a more recent email - I hope you got it?

I'll continue with anyone that I've already read for, but no new people now.

I will read it for you.

I didn't want to make myself available for everyone because I'm still getting used to working. If this works out though, I may be available to read more personal statements.

*If you haven't sent me a PS draft by 8/19, it'll be too late for me to work on it because I'll be starting classes. If you send one before that, I will continue to work with you on it.

PreVetBeaver: I will edit whatever you would like me too.

I can be as merciless as you need... but always constructive.

nyanko: I don't sugar coat things and I won't nitpick grammar, though spelling & word choice I may. I am pretty easily bored so I'm a good metric of whether your statement is likely to stand out to someone on the low end of the spectrum. Also, my general rule is I will only really help you if you're a regular contributor here - non-trads and reapplicants get priority.

I'm just updating mine to say this: "Do NOT send me your PS unless you are an active poster here." I've gotten several "will you help me with my PS" PMs from people with 0 posts. If you haven't posted here, you're not going to get any help.

Is there anyone out there that is reading Personal Statements since all the vet students have started school! Would love to get some other looks at mine!

Is there anyone out there that is reading Personal Statements since all the vet students have started school! Would love to get some other looks at mine!

I am in the same boat. Is anyone still reading personal statements? Thank you in advance for the help!

Okay people. I know I was on the list to start with, but you will notice that I have removed myself at this time. I don't have time to read any new statements because I'm too busy going over my 8 hours/wk of phys lectures. Thanks!

Thank you guys! I am apparently not getting notices for SDN anymore.. 🙁

I'm still in the middle of a major overhaul.. but thank you guys for your offers!

Hey ya'll I'm also rescinding my offer to review. I'll gladly keep working with those who've already contacted me, but won't be 'accepting' any more. Sorry but it's a lot of work and not really fair to y'all when my turn around time is currently about 5 days.

Updated list:

(I used to be a copy editor for my school newspaper so...). I also asked a lot of vets to edit and comment on my personal statement last year so I know what to include, what to reword, etc. to help you come across as passionate about vet med instead of insincere (really easy to do, btw).

Dsmoody23: Soul-crushing document review.

My history includes a lot of employee hiring in both the veterinary and animal care businesses so I know what I would look for in an animal person

psilovethomas: anything the microsoft word editing function will not catch. Tense, word order, sentence structure and cohesiveness. I will almost always make recommendations on how to improve your essay. I will tell you if your essay sucks, so be thick skinned.

that redhead: I'll read it and I'll comment where I see necessary.

Pretty free all summer, although it might take a day or two for me to get it back to you. Don't PM me your statement unless you are an active member (aka -- you have posted on the boards at least a few times).

Tuckervet: I will check for spelling and grammar mistakes, and offer suggestions regarding content/flow/ overall impressions. I will give suggestions and am happy to work with you on editing, but will not rewrite it for you because your PS is not supposed to be in my words. Please make the effort of proof reading it at least once - if it is coming up wrong on my spell-check, it showed up on yours. PM me about it and I'll give you my e-mail address to send the actual essay. If you haven't sent me a PS draft by 8/19, it'll be too late for me to work on it because I'll be starting classes. If you send one before that, I will continue to work with you on it.

Armymutt25A: I won't edit, but will mark up and make suggestions.

Sorry guys, with classes having started up I will not be accepting any new personal statements to critique. Removed myself from the list

Sorry Guys. I am a total flake. Many apologies to the people who were/are waiting for me to critique. These last couple weeks have been incredibly difficult for me (absolutely nothing to do with classes starting - just coincides) I don't think I'm in a place right now to give beneficial feedback now that classes are actually picking up. I'm REALLY SORRY for dropping the ball with you guys. 🙁

you can hate me. my apologies!

I keep trying to get out but they keep dragging me back in! Removed myself again.

Hello everyone. I am brand new member of this forum, but have been lurking for awhile🙂 I was wondering if anyone would be willing to read over my personal statement? It is a rough draft and I would just like some feedback from someone in the same boat. I would gladly read one in return!

Take a look at the MOST CURRENT list of names, PM one or more of them, and ask.

(Thx, TT... good point.)

I'll read some as well!

I was a former English major with a focus on grammar and editing. I can also comment on cohesiveness and general content.

For those that don't want it edited but have a PS, I'd love if you'd send it to me to read anyway! I'm not applying until next year, but am still trying to get a feel for what belongs in a PS and what makes a strong one!

Adding myself to the end of the list...

My history includes a lot of employee hiring in both the veterinary and animal care businesses so I know what I would look for in an animal person

psilovethomas: anything the microsoft word editing function will not catch. Tense, word order, sentence structure and cohesiveness. I will almost always make recommendations on how to improve your essay. I will tell you if your essay sucks, so be thick skinned.

that redhead: I'll read it and I'll comment where I see necessary.

Armymutt25A: I won't edit, but will mark up and make suggestions.

PreVetBeaver: I will edit whatever you would like me too.

I can be as merciless as you need... but always constructive.

nyanko: I don't sugar coat things and I won't nitpick grammar, though spelling & word choice I may. I am pretty easily bored so I'm a good metric of whether your statement is likely to stand out to someone on the low end of the spectrum. Also, my general rule is I will only really help you if you're a regular contributor here - non-trads and reapplicants get priority.

kakurubird: I haven't applied yet, so can't necessarily comment too much on content, but would be happy to help with last minute grammatical things and such before you submit. I've worked at my school's writing center and can get kind of grammar nerdy. Can also look at word choice, transitions, organization, etc. Also, I'm super not busy right now so will likely have time. PM for my email to send attachments (I love track changes).

Hello, I know I'm a little late - but I literally just finished last night. I have had the hardest time writing this, I've never written anything like it before and didn't even know where to start - I must have written 20 different versions before I came up with this one. Please, I'm willing to swap if anybody hasn't submitted theirs yet - or even if someone just wouldn't mind giving me some advice!? Let me know if I should post it here or email it. Thanks guys!!!

Ferretmom,
Good morning. I got your statement, but for some reason I am unable to PM you back?

I know I am super late but I was wondering if anyone would be able to look at my personal statement. I am over characters and have been re-reading but I can't seem to shorten it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It may be a tad early for this, but since at least one person has already asked for assistance with their personal statement, maybe there are others. At the very least, we should be seeing more people looking for help within the next few months.

And we're off...

Bearby: Content, grammar, cohesiveness, "hook," basically anything you want. Be warned that I can be blunt when it comes to poor grammar.
hey I need some help with my med school personal statement. do you think you can help me?
