I'll start this thread off by saying that yes, I do know it's super early, but one person has asked for a personal statement review, not for vet school but still 😀. I know this time last year I either had my first draft done or nearly done, so thought I'd get this started for any early birds 🙂. Plus, I have tons of time now and will be super busy with wildlife rehab by the middle of April. I got so much help with my PS last year and want to help all the 2017ers out!

squirrelsrule: Overall flow and cohesiveness, general comments, can look at spelling and grammar if you want as well. I am available mostly before spring but will make time in the summer as well. July and August will have plenty of time again as I transition from rehabbing to getting ready for vet school.

I definitely don't think its too early. I wrote my first rough draft last month. I'm going to revisit it in the next few weeks to do some revising (I had to force myself to not look at it after I wrote it - I know I would have obsessed over it during my entire holiday break if I didn't draw that line in the sand!).

I'm so glad to see this thread started. I have my PS from last cycle but not sure how I want to change it up for this year.

kakurubird: Can help with spelling and grammar, general comments, etc. Former writing center tutor in undergrad and I tend to write lots of comments since I can't talk to the writer as easily as I'm used to. Available any time.

Yay! Way to carry the torch, SR!! 🙂

(I'll take a look at a limited number of PSs over summer, but won't add myself to the list until then.)

Nordicat:Certified K-12 teacher, good for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and general comments regarding flow/division of paragraphs and tone. I seriously had to help aclassroom full of teenagers write resumes and cover letters last year! :scared: I've earned 5's and 4.5's on the old GRE writing portions, as well.

I received tons of insightful help on my PS last cycle and would also like to help out this cycle.

Hey! Long time lurker but new posting member here 🙂 I'm so glad there are so many helpful people! I'm planning to apply for the 2017 cycle this year and want to start on my rough draft now so it's one less thing to worry about what applications come around.

I'm one of those people that get a bunch of ideas and am really bad at organization and supporting my argument...so far I've written a list of possible themes/arguments. For all the great writers out there who might be able to help me out, how would I go about explaining a career change after graduating from undergrad? Does this show weakness and lack of determination or dedication because I didn't want to be a veterinarian since I was younger?

For all the great writers out there who might be able to help me out, how would I go about explaining a career change after graduating from undergrad? Does this show weakness and lack of determination or dedication because I didn't want to be a veterinarian since I was younger?

I went from pre-vet in undergrad to computer programming (and graduated w/a BS in Business), then back to pre-vet, got waitlisted IS then got my teacher certification, worked as a teacher for 2 years (and about pulled my hair out 😛), then went back to working at a clinic. I applied again this cycle and, of the 7 schools I've applied to, have been invited for 5 interviews and waitlisted in the single digits at the only one of those 5 that has made any decisions so far. The other 2 schools don't interview, and I was rejected by Cornell.

If all that doesn't give you hope for those who have taken a somewhat indirect path, I don't know what will! The key is to be able to show that your experiences outside of vet med have solidified your decision to pursue vet med. You should still have a great GPA, GRE, and a variety of veterinary and animal experiences. If you can relate your previous degree(s)/jobs to vet med, then all the better! My business and education backgrounds will undoubtedly help me out as a vet, so I made sure to mention that in my PS.

The way I see it, it doesn't really matter if you haven't wanted to be a veterinarian your whole life. The AdComs are looking for an ADULT decision to pursue vet med, which means they want to see that you can cope with the crazy academics AND that you understand that the profession is so much more than fuzzy kittens and fluffy puppies. You just need to be able to prove that you know this is what you want and that you aren't going to give up.

Good luck!! :luck:

Just bumping this thread since it looks like people are starting to think about their applications.

I was told my ps was "well written and honest/genuine." I can help DEFINITELY NOW (I'm bored) through the end of July (I'll be 25 in the 28th-eek!)

NStarz: I can help with grammar/spelling (grammar Nazi...), flow, topic choice, cohesiveness. I am really good at coming up with topic sentences and memorable endings. Also available for brainstorming help to come up with a good topic 🙂 I can help from now until the middle of August or so. May be able to help during the semester as well, depending on how soul-sucking first year is.

How do I post my personal statement for a review and suggestions? I am waitlisted at Auburn. 👍 Since I won't know for about a month if I am in, I want to get a head start on the next applications....just in case 🙁

I am wondering if it is normal to just keep your original personal statement when you re-apply to a vet school the following year. I am getting conflicting opinions about this. Some say to just use the same one while others tell me to definitely write a completely different one. I have heard from one school that my PS was good. I don't really think there is too much wrong with how it is written.
Thanks for the help!😕

Is there anything you've learned in the past year that you can include in there? Anything you might want to point about about your resilience and dedication to the cause, as demonstrated by reapplication? Anything you've done in the meantime to make yourself a stronger applicant?

If you like it, then you don't have to start completely over. But yes, I think that there should have been stuff you did in the past year that makes you a better applicant this year, and you should allude to that in your PS. That doesn't mean you need to start over, but you can improve/update it.

A general question on personal statements: is it preferred that they be very formal, "professional" essays? Or would it be OK to go out on a limb and breathe a little life into it, do more story-telling, and develop a more personal (maybe even conversational) tone?

I ask since I've written fiction for a long time, and we purposefully break grammar rules for effect. As long as it's obviously intentional and meaningful, would it be acceptable for a PS to not be so straitlaced?

I would say yes (though I haven't applied yet)! Your personal statement should show who you are, and I think personal writing style is part of you. It will be your voice that they're reading, so write the way you want for effect. I don't think it's meant to be a formal "paper." My personal statement from HS was very informal and conversational, and both my counselor and I were very satisfied with it.

If ever there were a writing equivalent of "business casual," this would be it. I wouldn't recommend tweaking grammar rules for effect, but I also wouldn't recommend presenting some stiff, technical document. They're professional, yes; but they're not formal, necessarily.

Be concise but also be you; adcoms are interested in the person behind the transcripts, and the personal statement is one of your very, very few areas to give a glimpse of who you are.

I'd be a little careful with the controversial area. I took that tone with my personal statement, some people invited me for interviews and some people specifically pointed out that they didn't like that aspect of my application. But it is your personal statement and you're take on why you chose this field. Maybe the people who like it best will be your best fit. Just wanted to give you a heads up on what I experienced!

I know others have already commented on this, but I don't think I changed mine too much before the two years. For schools that used VMCAS, I had 4 interviews and now officially have 4 acceptances out of the 9 schools I applied to. Of those, two of them saw the essay both years. I might have tweaked it a little bit, but feel like I kept the same general idea for both essays. I did do brand new essays for Tufts because they told me to. They were impressed by my first ones and were looking forward to see what I did this year. Found out one of my essays fell short. Womp. I definitely had a harder time writing their essays this year since at the age of 22, it's not like I have a whole lot of life experiences to draw on. My major one I covered in the previous year's essays, so I couldn't do that again. I also didn't use any experiences in the veterinary field to prove why I'm a good candidate which I think helped me stand out, although Tufts made it sound like they would have liked a bit more of that.

Is it better to focus on a specific incident and tell the story of it in the personal statement or to use several examples and try to show a bunch of qualities? My pre-professional advisor is advocating for the second, but I'm having a lot of trouble weaving three separate examples into a cohesive narrative. I liked my original personal statement, which focused on one event (and touched on later ones) a lot better.

I think people get too hung up on "events". I've read successful PSs that don't talk about a single event. It is open ended so you can talk about anything you want. I talked about what made me realize vet med is for me, a few experiences as a tech where I also highlighted the strengths I would bring to the veterinary community( good communication, desire for continued education, critical thinking skills, etc), what specific field of vet med I wanted to do and why, and the diversity I would bring to the field. I really wish advisors would educate themselves more about the vet school app process.

I believe the prompt asks you to mention the experiences that helped shape your development in the field. 😉

I'd use this to touch on stuff outside of clinic work as well, btw. Everyone applying has veterinary experience, and most of us will talk about that one cat or dog or horse or goat or whatever that struck us to the marrow - and that's fine, but also include something about what you've learned from, say, running cytologies and bloodwork and some of the other aspects of veterinary medicine.

I know what really helped me was looking at past applicants' PS. I believe LIS was one who let me see his, and now we are best of buds! (Bahahaha)

I will be willing to do this if you pm me your email address. And remember, I applied everywhere. They will know if you stole mine :meanie:

👍

More often than not, when I hear "Well, my pre-vet advisor said ...." it's never what I would consider to be good advice. In this case, though, I don't think it was bad.

Equineconstant, I think either approach can work. Part of the key is to remember that your application is a whole entity. Weak parts need to be balanced out by strengths elsewhere. If you have a ridiculous diversity of experience, you probably could get away from dragging in puzzle piece after piece to your personal statement. If your experience is weak, you probably need to have a great story that's going to reach into multiple areas of your life in your PS.

One minor bit of advice that gets overlooked because so many people apply to multiple schools: if you're applying to only one school, drag that into your PS and give them a reason to think you're a good fit for THEIR school, not just 'vet school'.

To Bracco Pointer: I don't think it needs to be stiffly formal - in fact, I think it shouldn't be - but I think you want to stay within the boundaries of professional writing with correct grammar and spelling. It could work to go away from that, but I think the risk is pretty big. I'd look at it as 'business casual' writing: you don't need the formal dress, but you can't show up in ripped jeans.

I know. Really, I miss it so much.

Alright, be on the look out for mine!!! I love how my interviewers thought I was a vegetarian (which I'm not).

So first piece of advice: even if you use something for entertainment value, they WILL ask you about it!!!
