Personal Statement Readers 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope, I wasn't going to steal your PS. I have my own unique identifiers that make me a good fit for vet school. I was just wondering about how personal to go/which experiences were appropriate to include/structure.

I hate to say this, but no one is going to just send you a copy of their PS. If you want opinions on something that you have already written look at the list above and send a private message to any of those people to see if they would be willing to read your PS and give you any suggestions or anything.

Best way to test an idea and see if it will work for you is to just start writing on it. If it turns out you don't like it, scrap it and move to the next. I went through about 6 half PS before I settled on the one I liked.

Thanks for your input!

Removing myself from the list. If you've sent me a PS previously, feel free to send new drafts and those waiting on a response that I agreed to look over, I'm working on it and hope to get them all out this weekend.

kakurubird: Can help with spelling and grammar, general comments, etc., but willing to focus on whatever you prefer. Former writing center tutor in undergrad and I tend to write lots of comments, generally in suggestion form, since I can't talk to the writer as easily as I'm used to. Available any time.

Fly Racing I had an admissions essay printed in a "how to book" as an example of an exemplary essay. I used no other editors or helpers with the essay! I'm happy to look at others for the big ideas, creative and eye catching concepts, with most importantly a professional structure.

Reader19: Love editing, writing minor. Will write long responses, with questions, suggestions, etc. I'm a big stickler for grammar, will help with finding what is most important in your writing and finding compelling/powerful ways of saying it.

kaydubs: ummmmmm.....Sparknotes: I will edit the heck out of your statement. If you so desire. If you ask, thou shalt receive. [I am ACTUALLY gonna try and go to vet school this time] I love to edit. And read. and write. [Liberal arts trained, tutoring fiend] - serious English lit. minor with supporting bio & philo majors.

finnerma: can help with spelling, grammar, love to edit and have experience editing essays, research articles and the like. Particularly good at improving flow of an essay. Your essay will look torn apart after you get it back from me, but don't be afraid!

moocow1987: Anything from grammar editing to big idea brainstorming, and I will be very honest with you. I can help now through August!

nuevaburro : I'm a grammar fiend and a teaching assistant, so I carry a red pen everywhere! Also a walking dictionary/thesaurus. I am really good at helping to get within word limits, and generating ideas. And if all goes well I won't need to be rewriting my own PS this fall so I would actually have time to read someone else's.

TigerWillow : was taught college grammar in 5th grade, so I've had much practice at catching those mistakes! Good at judging "hooks" and cutting down verbiage, especially with that word count! I was told my ps was "well written and honest/genuine." I can help DEFINITELY NOW (I'm bored) through the end of July (I'll be 25 in the 28th-eek!)\

hopefulinva: My other degree is Management, so I'm well versed in business and technical writing; I'm also the daughter of a creative writer. Other than grammar, spelling, and diction, I'm VERY good at identifying areas where you can really "sell" yourself! I'll be graduating mid-May so I'll be busy around that time, also near the end of June, and from August onwards I will be unable to help. But until then, please use me! I want to help you! (NOTE: Please send in .pdf format (Word can save in this file type), because I like to scribble on them 😉 )

NStarz: I can help with grammar/spelling (grammar Nazi...), flow, topic choice, cohesiveness. I am really good at coming up with topic sentences and memorable endings. Also available for brainstorming help to come up with a good topic 🙂 I can help from now until the middle of August or so. May be able to help during the semester as well, depending on how soul-sucking first year is.

HopefulAg: I am a stickler for spelling, grammar, and phrasing. I'll review for anything but those are my strong points. I can't necessarily tell you how to make a story good, but I can tell you how to make it legible! Only caveat is that I can't review anything until the end of July.[/QUOTE]

twelvetigers will read them until mid-August. I try to help with content if I can, and point out things that sound weird. I'm not a magician. I'm also very forgetful. So you should PM to get an email address to send it to, then send it and make sure you say who you are in the title, and then wait until I have forgotten about it thoroughly (say, a week) and then pester me again. And again. I will do it - I just forget emails in a matter of minutes.

squirrelsrule: Overall flow and cohesiveness, general comments, can look at spelling and grammar if you want as well. I am available mostly before spring but will make time in the summer as well. July and August will have plenty of time again as I transition from rehabbing to getting ready for vet school.

Hey guys,
Would any of you be able to look over my personal statement? I'm having a bit of trouble making it professional (cover letter approach like NCSU wants) yet personal (don't want it to be too romantic/ story-like). I'm not sure if you all will get this messege, I'm new to the STN and this is only my second post. 🙂

Hi everyone, I was wondering what I should focus on in my personal statement. I currently open mine talking about living in a foreign country, and then the rest of my PS is about how my experiences with animals have inspired me to become a vet. I know they want "unique" people, so should I focus it more on living in a foreign country? I think the animal experiences I talk about are pretty cool as well (zoo, wildilfe rescue center) so I have no idea. I'm currently way over the character limit hahaha. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on PS's, but since I just finished writing mine I might be able to offer a bit of advice. In my opinion, you don't necessarily have to have a main focus for you PS, but find a way to tie everything you highlight together. You mention having unique experiences. This is definitely helpful, but don't forget that you are among hundreds of applicants. Many applicants, myself included, have very similar experiences. I know that I personally don't want to be just another application in a stack. I want to stand out. I briefly touch on how my international experiences helped form the person I am now, how my wildlife medicine experiences prepared me for this career, yada yada. But rather than using your character to highlight your experiences, use your experiences to highlight what it is about your character that makes you the stand out applicant we all want to be.

As for the character limit. yuck. I spent hours cutting mine down. Once you have all the info jam packed in your PS, go through and cut any word or phrase that is unnecessary. Double check the ends of each paragraph to see if you added a space after the period before hitting the enter button (did this and saved 5 whole characters! haha)

Best of luck! :luck: 🙂

Edit: You'll find this everywhere too.... utilize the search function. It's really really really really helpful. really.

Thanks for the response! I wrote about my experiences in terms of how they inspired me to want to become a vet, so I guess it's more about my motivation and not so much the experience itself. I read somewhere that you want to add personal touches, bu it's just really hard trying to figure out how to stand out since everyone else has unique experiences and motivations.

Thanks much and good luck!

That is great, as a start. You should write about what experiences inspired you to become a vet, but that should not be your entire personal statement. Focus on who you are. What traits, talents, experiences, etc do you have that will make you an amazing veterinary student and later veterinarian. Play up your strengths, tell them who you are, make it seem like you are going to be the greatest addition to vet med, far better than the other applicants. (Yes, I know it sounds conceded, but this is not the time to be shy... Don't be too self-absorbed though either). This is your chance to shine, to sell yourself, to show to the adcoms that you will be a great addition to their veterinary school and to the veterinary career. Yes, tell about how an experience inspired your interest in vet med but if you are just going from experience to experience and how each one inspired you to go into vet med, it will probably end up sounding like a broken record at the end. Change it up some, tell about an experience that inspired you to vet med, explain what you learned from the experience about vet med, did you gain anything from those experiences other than the desire to be a vet, anything that you can use as a vet or vet student? Tell them about that.

Hope that helps some. I know the PS was the weak link in my application and each year it got a little bit better. (With help from some of the post-application reviews). Good Luck! :luck:

Hello! Anyone up to reading my personal statement and giving some tips? I've been working on it this entire weekend after being struck by inspiration, but I sent it to my advisor and he said that it sounded too much like I was listing my accomplishments. Granted, I'm still not done, but I've hit another rut and I'm quite exhausted and frustrated. Let me know and I can attach it here or send it to your email. Thanks! 🙂

Thanks! Would you try to explain why your GPA was low for a semester (kind of a lame excuse) if you can tie it into how you improved and made you a better academic? Or would you just want to leave the negatives out, even if you can spin it in a positive way?

Also, when you talk about your traits, should you explicitly say how they'll help you be a great vet student and vet in the future? It just seems so.. bleh. hahaha sorry, I can't really think right now. my brain. ow.

Would anyone be willing to look at a non-vet personal statement? I'll probably PM/beg/plead/cry at some of the people I know here, but I wondered if anyone would be willing.

I'll read it for you if you're interested! I'll PM you my email.

Now that my PS isn't a POS and I feel like I actually might be able to offer some sort of real assistance I'll add myself on here.

wildcatj: I'll edit whatever. Grammar, content, flow, etc. After my mess with writing my PS this year I totally understand frustrations, so if it just sucks (like mine did) and you need some help getting in the right direction let me know!

I messaged a few of you and then read on and saw that a lot of people aren't reading them right now 😎

So to make this a little easier, who is still available for a quick peruse of my statement? Soul crushing and nit-picky editors welcome (and preferred!)

Thanks!

So I'm working on my personal statement right now but I'm having trouble deciding just how proper my grammar should be. I wrote it like I was talking to my friend or advisor, but when I let my friend edit it, he changed the grammar and the whole thing ended up sounding a bit like an essay. So I'm just wondering, if proper grammar really weighs a whole lot into consideration when my statement is read.

Any thoughts or advice?

Though it is a personal statement and you do want your personality to show, you should be able to demonstrate proper usage of the language.

I hear you, but what I'm most concerned about, for example, is that when I used the word "person" in my ps I used "their" instead of "his or her", which imo makes it sound more like an essay if I do use "his or her"

Am I being too paranoid 😕

I don't think it's bad to have it sound like an essay. Most of the advice out there for graduate school admissions essays says that you should absolutely make it sound like an essay, and I had one veterinarian edit my PS to make the language and grammar more formal.

As for that specific example: several biology professors at my college absolutely hated it when people used "their" for "his or her," since "their" is technically singular. They would get really worked up/concerned about it (the English professors would too, of course, but I figure the biology professors' reactions are more relevant here).

don't you think making your ps sound formal like an essay would be "playing it safe"? I thought the evaluators love it when you get personal

edit:: thanks for your input about the grammar thing btw 🙂

In my opinion, and from the advice I have read/heard, the subject matter of the ps should be personal - very personal - but the tone should not be familiar or casual. That's not to say I didn't use come colloquialisms or connotative words, but I only did if they did not contradict proper grammar. I didn't make my tone formal per say, but I did make it professional. After all, they want to know that you can be professional when talking/writing about emotional, personal, and/or very important subjects.

But hey, that's just what I've heard. If you get different advice from adcoms, professors, or vets, go with what they say.

Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

I had it posted on here but I suppose that's a bad idea. Anyone willing to read?

Thanks wildcatj.

I wouldn't suggest just posting your PS on here, it is accessible to everyone. Pick someone off the list above and send them a PM to see if they'd be interested reading it for you.

To the person who sent me their PS unsolicited -

No I will not read your PS that you sent me without even the courtesy of asking if I have time, because if you think that is appropriate, then you don't deserve my help. Yes I can be a bastard sometimes. Congrats on pissing me off. Thankfully I didn't see it when you originally sent it on the weekend because you would have ruined a nice day. Believe it or not, the world doesn't exist to do you favors.

Screw you,
SOV

Who piddled in your cereal this mornin SOV?

I'd encourage them to keep going because your cranky post made my day... but just so you don't give yourself a stroke, maybe remember that not everyone is capable of looking at the latest list that no longer has you on it. And not everyone is paranoid as I am and would not search your handle on the thread to see every post you've had to stalk and see if you were no longer reading. When anxious newbies post here asking who'll read their PS, the most common response is "grow a pair, just pick someone from the list you admire and send it over." Be flattered someone admires you 😉

I had a friend read my PS and ask if it was appropriate to Capitalize the word Veterinarian... I of course see the word worthy of being capitalized, but in english/grammar/spelling rules I have no idea if I should or not...

Opinions?

Sorry, just saw this! I missed it when going through this thread earlier. I am going to explain how I am completely responsible for one bad semester (spread my self too thin. completely my fault) and then follow that with how and what I learned from that experience, how i've improved, yada yada. Don't emphasize anything negative, but address the issue worrying you, take responsibility, and explain how you've worked hard to improve.

I also talk about my traits as things i've learned throughout my experiences and how i feel they will make me a successful veterinarian one day. That is kind of a big deal in my PS. I'm not sure if it really matters if you'll be a good vet student per se, but you definitely want to come off as being the base that a successful veterinarian could be built on. Hope that helps!

I had a friend read my PS and ask if it was appropriate to Capitalize the word Veterinarian... I of course see the word worthy of being capitalized, but in english/grammar/spelling rules I have no idea if I should or not...

Opinions?

I'm going with lower case at all times. I only capitalized it for names, ie College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cool!! I just googled something and this picture made me laugh!

Hey.. So I'm wondering who is still willing to read a PS? I've looked through the list and it appears that many readers were no longer able to read after August. Instead of messaging all the other people on the list I figured I'd see who still has the time and would be willing to help me with mine. I could use all kinds of help, but my main concern right now is that I'm over the 5000 character limit. Any takers?

Count me in too! I was a later personal statement writer...well I worked on it for a LONGGG time but just recently "finished."

Could anyone read it or browse through it?

Thanks so much guys.

hi guys,
there are four questions asking for the PS. is it okay to write one of them pretty long and other ones short? cuz so far, i have written 1700 words for first and second, and about 800 each for third and fourth questions.. do i have to make them even?

You don't have to answer them evenly. Just make sure you address the prompt in its entirety.

How long does the LOR have to be?

How long does the LOR have to be?

eLORs are filled out by other people. As far as I know it is mostly a select an answer thing, with a brief essay part, I don't think there is a length requirement. Anyways, you don't have do worry about that, the people you have filling it out will get all the directions.

I'm also willing to read PS's this summer (mainly June-July, I'll be gone a bit in August). 🙂

Sorry for reviving a year-old thread, but I was too shy to start a brand new one 😳 I will be applying this summer and have already finished a potential personal statement... I just don't know if it's quite the direction I should take or not. If any of you would be willing to read it and offer a bit of advice, I'd really appreciate it! I'm applying to Illinois and Wisconsin, so I'm especially interested in advice from accepted vet students at those schools, but any advice from vet students would be more than welcome 🙂

If you're willing to send it to someone who is still being considered for Auburn only, feel free to send it to me. 😀 I'm good at paragraph structure, nitpicky grammar, and overall direction of the paper.

Thanks tropictuco, that would be great! I will PM it to you 🙂

Would still love to get advice from current vet students as well! I should probably mention that I mostly just need feedback on the content of my PS... my mom is an English teacher so I've got the grammar-editing part covered 😀 Anyway, I went in a kind of unusual direction with my essay topic and not sure if it's a good or bad idea!

I'll look at it if you'd like to send it to me. I have a musculoskeletal exam on Monday so can't get to it before that, but will look at it sometime next week.

I'm happy to read it for you too. I got into Wisconsin and declined my interview at Illinois. Send me a PM and I'll give you my email. It's easier for me to read and edit if you can attach it as a word doc.

I'd be happy to help read and give feedback for personal statements as well. I got into Minnesota and declined my acceptance to Michigan State. I work during the day so I've got plenty of time at nights and on weekends to help out!

Thank you all so much! I will PM all of you. You're all awesome! 😍

hey guys, I am in need of some advice on my PS. My grades are not the best and I have thought a LOT about this. I feel I could write a very good section about how going through that experience has made me a better student, person, and therefore a better applicant. There were some personal problems that I had to deal with during that time but I don't think I really want to focus on that because I don't feel they are strong enough to mention... although they did definitely effect my performance in school and life, so I'm not sure on that. My question is, do you think it would be good to put in my personal statement? Or do you think it would be better put in the explanation section? Thanks for your help 🙂

Someone on the successful apps stat thread (can't remember who, sorry!) had an excellent point- if you want to explain a personal problem, do so in a way that makes it a positive, not an excuse. so, if you were struggling with something, it's better to frame it as "I dealt with this issue and I overcame it, I learned this and that" than "this part of my application is weak because of this issue." so, depending on how you can frame it should decide if it's in your PS or your explanation statement, or just something you prepare to be asked about during an interview.

I'm going to go ahead and make a 2013 PS readers thread. I had started working on mine by this time last year so I figure it's not too early!
