Personal Statement Readers 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am willing to share my PS too. Seeing other people's PSs really helps give you ideas, but I think it's a good idea to have a draft you feel is halfway decent before reading them or all your gonna think of is how to make yours structured just like the one's you read and that isn't very helpful.

Well, my problem is in figuring out how to structure it! But at least I've got multiple examples to look at, so that ought to make total structure stealing a non-issue. Thanks, all.

I'm happy to read PS's until school starts again (NEVER... ok end of August)!

I'm also willing to read PS's this summer (mainly June-July, I'll be gone a bit in August). 🙂

Just stating that I will be available (June-July) as well to read PS's.

Let's bring back the list, maybe?

squirrelsrule: Overall flow and cohesiveness, general comments, can look at spelling and grammar if you want as well. I am available mostly before spring but will make time in the summer as well. July and August will have plenty of time again as I transition from rehabbing to getting ready for vet school.

kakurubird: Can help with spelling and grammar, general comments, etc., but willing to focus on whatever you prefer. Former writing center tutor in undergrad and I tend to write lots of comments, generally in suggestion form, since I can't talk to the writer as easily as I'm used to. Available any time.

Nordicat: Certified K-12 teacher, good for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and general comments regarding flow/division of paragraphs and tone. I seriously had to help aclassroom full of teenagers write resumes and cover letters last year! I've earned 5's and 4.5's on the old GRE writing portions, as well.

Fly Racing I had an admissions essay printed in a "how to book" as an example of an exemplary essay. I used no other editors or helpers with the essay! I'm happy to look at others for the big ideas, creative and eye catching concepts, with most importantly a professional structure.

bbeventer: Can help with the big idea, general flow, and general comments. Essentially I will work with what you give me.

Reader19: Love editing, writing minor. Will write long responses, with questions, suggestions, etc. I'm a big stickler for grammar, will help with finding what is most important in your writing and finding compelling/powerful ways of saying it.

kaydubs: ummmmmm.....Sparknotes: I will edit the heck out of your statement. If you so desire. If you ask, thou shalt receive. [I am ACTUALLY gonna try and go to vet school this time] I love to edit. And read. and write. [Liberal arts trained, tutoring fiend] - serious English lit. minor with supporting bio & philo majors.

finnerma: can help with spelling, grammar, love to edit and have experience editing essays, research articles and the like. Particularly good at improving flow of an essay. Your essay will look torn apart after you get it back from me, but don't be afraid!

moocow1987: Anything from grammar editing to big idea brainstorming, and I will be very honest with you. I can help now through August!

nuevaburro : I'm a grammar fiend and a teaching assistant, so I carry a red pen everywhere! Also a walking dictionary/thesaurus. I am really good at helping to get within word limits, and generating ideas. And if all goes well I won't need to be rewriting my own PS this fall so I would actually have time to read someone else's.

TigerWillow : was taught college grammar in 5th grade, so I've had much practice at catching those mistakes! Good at judging "hooks" and cutting down verbiage, especially with that word count! I was told my ps was "well written and honest/genuine." I can help DEFINITELY NOW (I'm bored) through the end of July (I'll be 25 in the 28th-eek!)\

hopefulinva: My other degree is Management, so I'm well versed in business and technical writing; I'm also the daughter of a creative writer. Other than grammar, spelling, and diction, I'm VERY good at identifying areas where you can really "sell" yourself! I'll be graduating mid-May so I'll be busy around that time, also near the end of June, and from August onwards I will be unable to help. But until then, please use me! I want to help you! (NOTE: Please send in .pdf format (Word can save in this file type), because I like to scribble on them 😉 )

SOV: If you want a soul-crushing, blunt, true critique of your PS, I'm your man. I'll tell you what makes you look boring, plain, stupid, *****ic, and just un-acceptable in general. I have time now because I am not in classes and ready to burst your optimistic bubble. Some applicants have appreciated my feedback, others.... the death of hope can be hard to live with. :meanie:

NStarz: I can help with grammar/spelling (grammar Nazi...), flow, topic choice, cohesiveness. I am really good at coming up with topic sentences and memorable endings. Also available for brainstorming help to come up with a good topic 🙂 I can help from now until the middle of August or so. May be able to help during the semester as well, depending on how soul-sucking first year is.

HopefulAg: I am a stickler for spelling, grammar, and phrasing. I'll review for anything but those are my strong points. I can't necessarily tell you how to make a story good, but I can tell you how to make it legible! Only caveat is that I can't review anything until the end of July.
Tuckervet: I can help with spelling/grammar, flow, content, etc. I can start reading them now through August, just message me and I'll give you my e-mail address.

jushorsinaround: I am really good at balancing description with personal meaning, as well as word choice and overall flow. I am also relatively good at grammar, especially the obscure grammar-nazi rules! I can start reading now until vet school begins in August

bunnity until August

bbeventer in June/July.

variegata in June/July.

twelvetigers will read them until mid-August. I try to help with content if I can, and point out things that sound weird. I'm not a magician. I'm also very forgetful. So you should PM to get an email address to send it to, then send it and make sure you say who you are in the title, and then wait until I have forgotten about it thoroughly (say, a week) and then pester me again. And again. I will do it - I just forget emails in a matter of minutes.

To what extent (if any) is it OK to mention specific patients in your PS? Obviously, it would be a no-no to say "Fido Smith, a 4y/o CM, Jack Russel that came into the hospital on May 27th..." But is the pet's name and breed alright to mention, or would that be getting into the grey area of patient confidentiality?

I don't know why you would want to bog your PS down with those kinds of details...

I put in mine a 12 year old lab came in struggling to breathe or something along those lines, I wouldn't use the pet's name, just takes up space and isn't really valuable info. I don't think there's an issue with using pet name, age, and what happened.

Why not change the name? That probably doesn't have much bearing on your PS/story.

Thanks! There are a couple of very vivid cases that I'd like to mention in my PS, since the (good) way they were managed really affected my perception of vet med. I'll probably stick with the name and breed, just as identifiers so I don't sound like a broken record using the same noun over and over again.

I'm too scared to PM any o' yall :scared:

Would someone be willing to discuss the general idea I have for my PS with me via e-mail? This is my first time applying and I have no idea what I'm doing. I have a basic sense of what I want to write but I'm not sure whether it'll be boring/silly/not what they're looking for.

In order to get our email... you are going to have to PM us 😀

I know life is terrible.

So I am sick of looking at this personal statement and could really use a fresh pair of eyes!
I think my area of troubles are general cohesiveness and flow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

um i don't know if this thread is still active, but some "abusive/tough love" is needed on my personal statement (lame joke? 🙂). ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a first time applicant and i'm not sure where P.S paper is supposed to go....

thank you!

Message someone on the list and they will let you know their preferred method of receiving personal statements (email or pm). I am willing to look at it, send me a pm if you'd like me to.

Livin4dentistry, you are in the pre-vet forum, not dentistry. We've had a few threads for swapping personal statements between med and pre-vets, not sure how many of the PS readers here look at other fields PSs though. If you can't find a dentistry person to look at it, I can try to help, I don't know anything about dentistry though.

I'm still open for reading PS's, if y'all need a hand. I won't be come August, but for now I'm all yours! =)

HI all! I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I just want to say I love this site and find everyone's advice and insight on these forums a great resource. Thank you to everyone who's volunteered their time to look over personal statements, I think it's great that there are so many people willing to help us aspiring veterinarians. I will be applying for my first time this fall and have found the PS to be particularly agonizing to write. I would greatly appreciate any feedback the readers would be willing to give me. Thanks again!

Would you guys think it is okay if I didn't use any specific case examples in my PS?

I'm thinking of focusing on a bigger picture of vet med (about what I've found/learned it's about from working in a variety of clinics and with a variety of animals and people) rather than specific details of one vivid case.

I originally thought about using a client/vet euthanasia story that I remember back from my freshman year of college as the time when I made my adult decision to become a vet. Back then I thought that I wanted to be a vet because I wanted to be the person helping comfort both the people and the dog, and use my science knowledge to help them both.

Now 3 years later and more experienced, I want to talk about how vet med is a science field, teamwork, how I enjoyed working with a variety of cases during the past few years shadowing, and lifelong learning.

I guess my adult decision to become a vet happened for sure this past summer from working in a wildlife clinic alongside vets and vet students. I enjoyed the uniqueness of each case and applying science I've learned in school to treat the animal.

Sorry this was a little long. Im still brainstorming my PS here and I guess my question is would you think it'd be okay to leave out a specific case and just focus more on the broad like Ive mentioned above? Thank you!

Absolutely! 👍 You may get a few opinions on this, but I definitely don't think specific examples are needed. My PS definitely didn't focus on any at all.

I'd like to add too,

I have absolutely NO idea what kind of vet I would like to be one day. So far I've found all my veterinary experiences fascinated and I love learning different things from each of them.

I've volunteered/shadowed 100+ hours of each, large/food animal, equine, wildlife, and small animal.

Do most people describe what kind of vet they would like to be in their PS? Like what to do with the degree? Because right now I'm just up for learning more and discovering what exactly I want. If anything right now I'd probably do mixed animal but i don't know for sure.

ah okay thanks! this helps my brainstorming just to see what others have done

I wrote about what has influenced me into a certain area of veterinary medicine, but it's ok to not know what you want to do yet. However, if you keep having things you can't talk about, it might be hard to write a PS

Has anyone on this thread been accepted to an Australianand/or international school that would like to review my statement? My past and academics are far fromtraditional and my PS will make or break me when applying internationally. Ireally need the help of someone’s open-mindedness but also someone who will bebrutally honest with me.

zanydogz anytime until late August since I start school then. I'm really good with grammar, and very good with flow. I'll also pick out any words or phrases that sound awkward. PM me and I'll give you my email address!

hey guys, I am in need of some advice on my PS. My grades are not the best and I have thought a LOT about this. I feel I could write a very good section about how going through that experience has made me a better student, person, and therefore a better applicant. There were some personal problems that I had to deal with during that time but I don't think I really want to focus on that because I don't feel they are strong enough to mention... although they did definitely effect my performance in school and life, so I'm not sure on that. My question is, do you think it would be good to put in my personal statement? Or do you think it would be better put in the explanation section? Thanks for your help 🙂

I would include it in the explanation statement. You want your PS to be overwhelmingly positive (not always positive about the profession, mind you, but why you are so amazingly awesome and will be such an amazing vet that they have no choice not to accept you). If you want to include it, I would make it very trim and to the point, and don't dwell on it. The statement you said above is actually perfect, IMO. "Going through such and such has made me better suited to handle the demands of the veterinary profession," for example. And then go on to say HOW you have improved, ie, improved study habits, more focus on personal health, commitment to your studiets, etc (not sure what kind of situation you were dealing with). HTH.

NStarz, thanks for the great advice 🙂 that definitely seems like the best way to go

And again. I will do it - I just forget emails in a matter of minutes.

zanydogz anytime until late August since I start school then. I'm really good with grammar, and very good with flow. I'll also pick out any words or phrases that sound awkward. PM me and I'll give you my email address!

Sorry, I really can't take any more PS's. 🙁 I'm working on editing a bunch right now, and it's taking me forever just to get those done. I'd hate to make anyone else wait!

squirrelsrule: Overall flow and cohesiveness, general comments, can look at spelling and grammar if you want as well.

Time for me to move my butt from CA to KS and start school, so I just don't have time anymore! Good luck to everyone 🙂

I need help cutting out some of the wording to get under the 5000 word limit- im at 5,134 words right now :l . Also I've mentioned that I have interest in being a mobile vet-mostly because I love being well...mobile lol. And I don't like always being tied down to one location-i didn't get into these details because of the length. I also have never had experience with a mobile vet. This is an experience I am seeking out-but I'm currently busy with two other internships. The prompt did ask what are goals are- so I thought I would be honest and put that in-is that ok? Please let me know if you are able to read through it! Thank you!!! 🙂

The limit is 5000 characters. If you are at 5000 words, you are waaaaaaaay toooooooo loooooooong.

That would be a bummer...
PS. SOV, are you still available to read PS's? And if so for how much longer? I know I'm going to need brutal editing in the near future, but I need to fix it up a bit more before you can make me cry.

I have been receiving a steady stream of PS' this year. It seems like more than the usual number of people are either 1) feeling lucky or 2) I am not acting as mean as I used to...

Anyway, classes start in 10 days, so I am mostly free until then. AFter that odds are pretty low, but because you are a regular, I could try to look at yours as a study break (you know, something to make me laugh!), but I will most likely be grumpy and contentious.

Haha, oh dear. Alright, I'll kick my butt into gear...

sorry meant five hundred characters not words

*removing myself from the list because school is about to start...if you have already contacted me, that's fine, but not taking any one else new at this point. Good luck to everyone!

OK, I know this is down to the wire ! but would anyone be willing to help me specifically with grammar and flow?

Also, I'm a returned Peace Corps Volunteer and I want to tie that in along with my interest in public health, but I'm having a hard time making it strong.

Anyone think they could help me make my statement sound better?

Thank you in advance 🙂

PM someone who has offered their help above, they should be able to provide some assistance if they are available.

Is anyone willing to share their personal statements? I would love to get an idea of what other people wrote! I am so lost trying to figure out what to write for mine!

Just removing myself, may I also offer a word of advice to all you people asking for help. I don't know how other people feel about this, but if you have "0" post contributed to this forum, I am not going to waste my time editing your PS, you should have other friends to do that for you (I hope).

In response to this and an addendum to what BB just mentioned. I hate to say it, but (I would hope) people aren't just going to share they're PS's with you. Can't help being a little worried that you're just going to steal the PS that gets sent to you.

Nope, I wasn't going to steal your PS. I have my own unique identifiers that make me a good fit for vet school. I was just wondering about how personal to go/which experiences were appropriate to include/structure.

Not saying that you're going to, just that it's a legitimate concern.

I've been brainstorming all day for my PS and unique-ness essay. I have a list of ideas, and was wondering if anyone would just look over it and tell me if they see any red flags- ie: don't put this in there! Or yea, go with that topic primarily. I'm getting a late start on this, But, I find I write best under pressure. Luckily I have some time this week to really get a lot done, and a whole month and some change to revise/ edit etc.

Best way to test an idea and see if it will work for you is to just start writing on it. If it turns out you don't like it, scrap it and move to the next. I went through about 6 half PS before I settled on the one I liked.
