Urgh I hate writing personal statements 🙁

Should I include my goals and expectation, where can I go to get my paper edited and no I don't want my friends or family to to read it. Could be personal..

I really don't know how to make my paper stand out from the rest ( I have something in mind but I'm afraid of being judged) but I also don't want my paper to be common.. What is a good outline for a paper... Do I really need I ask every school the essay question, what if I don't answer their question, will they not consider me at all? Please help !

Basically I am writing how different experiences in my life so far (shadowing, research, working) all have helped me gain different values that will help me become a good optometrist. Get it checked from a CC or university writing center.

I suggest using the SEARCH BOX here at SDN regarding Personal Statement writing. I seen a lot of great post from students before.

I feel that you're on a very good path!🙂 I'm in the process of writing my personal statement, too🙂 I plan on highlighting my overall shadowing and research experiences, which have played major roles in my decision to want to pursue optometry. I even think mentioning your first encounter with an optometrist for an eye visit and how much it impressed you, and made you realize the importance of one's vision for everyday functioning would be helpful.

I say look through the search box because you'll find useful information on Personal Statement both from student and writers from SDN.

I got confuse when you said this "Do I really need I ask every school the essay question"

Just letting you know that Personal Statement and Supplemental Essays are two different requirements. I don't think you need to individually contact the schools about "the essay questions" on personal statement. The prompt for writing it can be found in the Optomcas. (This is normally 1 page, single space, 4,500 characters w/ space Max). I think PS is much generalize that you can just simply attached it to every school.

As for the Supplemental Essay questions, some school will have it either in the Optomcas or a separate website that you have to fill-in. For the most part, you can have access on the questions online but if not then, yes call the school for the supplemental essay questions if you want to get started. For this, try not to use information that has been elaborated already from your personal statement. Yes, I do think it's Best to do 'em because 1) if they do ask them then it's a requirement 2) it's another way to get to know you.

whoaa.. I thought there was only a Personal Statement required..what is supplemental essays?

eyeluveyez,

I encourage you to look at the main website of each school that you are applying (esp the ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS). Often, those essays are shorter like 1-2 paragraph and specific questions like "Why choose this school?" But just to be sure, RESEARCH on their website.

Do all schools requires it?

You're welcome.

I don't think all school require supplemental essays but MAJORITY do. So i suggest, get cracking and get to know the admission process of the school you're applying for. Best wishes!

Most schools have secondary applications. Most will charge you another fee. If you don't want people to read your personal statement I would highly rethink that because your grammar on here is atrocious. Yes, I know it's an Internet forum, but it's very obvious. I had 3-4 people read mine and revised it several times. I also had several people read my supplemental questions for the schools I was really interested in. A good PS can make you stand out and partially make up for a crappy gpa, but a poorly written one with improper tenses/passive voice, etc. can be bad news bears.

Ummm. Ok. Just because this is an internet forum, there is no need for harsh comments. Thanks for the advice.👍

99% of people on this forum will take any opportunity to belittle other posters. Take any advice you get on here with a grain of salt.

As far as your personal statement goes, I would suggest simply writing to the prompt. Isn't it something like, "Why are you interested in optometry/what are you goals/etc"? Start off with how you first became interested in optometry, and then write about your experiences that helped solidify your decision. Then, talk about your future plans in the profession. It's pretty short; I had the most difficulty in trying to keep mine below the limit.

If you're still in school, I would suggest you ask one of your professors to proof-read the essay. I asked one of my English professors, and they were very helpful in getting me on-track and keeping my statements precise. If you're off for summer, perhaps email a teacher you're close to? Or you can PM it to me and I'll try to look it over. 🙂

As far as secondary applications, every school I applied to had one required. They're not difficult, though, so don't get yourself too worried about them. 🙂
