So I know the general consensus for DO students to match EM is to take step one. But I wanted to know how much it will hurt my chances if I only take step 2? My COMLEX I is mid 550s and I decided to wait a bit to take step I cause I wasn't scorning where I wanted to on NBMEs. I was under the impression that if I had gotten what I had gotten on the NBMEs it would hurt more then help. So my question is should I take this test and chance doing badly (hard to study for this test during rotations) or just forgo it and take step 2 (a test which I know I'll do better in as it's much more clinical)?

Also, before medical school, I worked in the ER as an RN and was also a medic. How much will that help me match aside from just looking good in rotations?

Depends on what you consider "doing bad". If you're projected to score less than a 220 then I probably wouldn't take it. But I'd say a score in the 220s would be more beneficial than having no step score at all.

Thanks for the response. Have you heard of DOs matching without step 1 and around my range on COMLEX??

Current 4th year DO student who didn't take Step 1 but took step 2 and did mediocre (also score around average on Level 1)...got 4 offers for auditions at MD programs...also did a lot of reaching out and leg work on my end before hand to make sure I could secure those rotations since I don't have a home program. Like I said...I'm just now a 4th year on my first audition so I don't know what the interview season will hold for me with my scores but I am working my tail off and hoping to get some great SLOEs to compensate for the around average scores...feel free to PM me for more details/questions.
