Anyone have their dog/cat insured? What company and which plan do you use? Have you had to make a claim? How did that go? What is the monthly cost? I am looking into insuring my cat but am having a hard time choosing a company and deciding what options I really want. I only really care about major medical in case something unexpected (and expensive!) happens.... especially since I just paid $$$$ to have a linear foreign body removed from her stomach & intestine and I will have a hard time paying for another surgery like that. I've had several insured horses but I'm having a hard time deciding on a dog/cat insurance company. Thanks.

My experience with pet insurance has not been a good one - clients ended up paying huge premiums and a lot of things weren't covered - in some cases even emergency surgery, in others some vaccines. It was just ridiculous.

I would look into Pets Best or VPI... VPI claims are easy and depending on your plan they pay a fair amount. One of my co-workers got it for her puppy and a month later the pup caught pnuemonia and VPI paid about $700.00 of her bill. Pets Best seems to be better about covering pre-existing conditions.

i've heard of a lot of great things about some pet insurance. vpi seems to be a good one. make sure you are very clear on your policy, or else you could be mislead.
my thoughts- if we are going to be vets, why should we have/need insurance? i understand if you are prevet and want it for the next few years, but i've never heard of a vet who has pet insurance.

Why is that?

Why is that?

Probably because many vets will help other vets out if they have a problem with their animal. My vet wont touch her own cat, b/c she knows she's not objective....so the other vet has been doing all the medicine on the cat, which has had some issues.

I already know I am not objective when it's my own animal just being a tech. I could spay or neuter my own pet.....but diagnosisng illness, or emergency surgery?? Forget it.

Why is that?

things don't cost as much for vets who do their own treatments, get free products/food, etc. i've just never heard of vets who have had pet insurance. i don't even see how they would claim things because of the discounts we get as vets (vaccines at cost, products discounted, dentals, etc)
