I was just wondering if anyone out there new of a case that a person was taken outside the match during match season in emergency medicine?

That is, are the programs themselves bound to the match process during the match season for applicants who are not in the match themselves?

I would love it if attendings/program directors could respond to this.

Why don't you just enter the match like everyone else. 😕

The match is about the only real chance of getting an EM residency PGYI position.

Guessing by their "resident" designation, they've been through the match once and may be looking for PGY 2 positions.

Unless he is a PGY1 EM resident he will have to enter EM as a PGY1. Even though the intern year of most primary Care specialties are almost identical to EM. An EM program will only give 6 months of credit at most to anyone transferring into their program from another specialty.

Unless he goes to a 1-4 program; then he may start as an PGY2.

If a resident completes an intern year in another specialty, s/he may enter a PGY1 spot in a 1-3 program in or outside of the match. He she may also enter a 1-4 as a PGY 1 through the match or a PGY 1 or PGY 2 outside of the match.

A little picky, I know...but maybe some clarification is needed.

I'm answering assuming this is a legitimate query.

If you are a US 4th year medical student, you cannot get a position outside the match. However, if you are an IMG, or if you are a US grad who for some reason took time off after graduation (i.e. did not match first time, did research for a year, etc), you are eligible for positions outside the match. I was in the latter group and was offered positions outside the match (which I chose not to take). Note that this is a really risky thing to do unless you are sure you want to go to that particular program: if you are a strong enough candidate that you would be offered positions outside the match, you will likely do very well in the match too.

The answer to your question is NO. Programs may choose candidates outside of the match so long as the candidate was not registered through ERAS.

I've met people who have prematched (or offered a position during their interview for a residency position) in EM

if you are a DO or a IMG you can totally do a "pre-match" in fact if your an img like me who really wants to do emergency medicine it's beneficial to do so.

Simply put, for fmg's there aren't that many spots and a steller fmg with amazing board scores has a decent chance of being beaten to a spot by a mediocre/poor us grade. So it actually becomes a wise decision rather than a "if you are strong enough to be offered a prematch your strong enough to do well in the match" situation

before you assume i'm talking out of hand on that last bit, i know a girl with a 250/260 who interviewed at 20 places and ranked them all last year and didn't match in any em spot. i'm not sure if she only interviewed at amazing places but if you look at the statistics she had a VERY high chance of matching somewhere so it's a rather exaggerated example that actually came true

was she an fmg?? I'm a little afraid that this might happen to me...
