Lets say that I have matched for prelim, but not a PGY-2.
If I apply (and IF I can apply) for a PGY-2 position only (no PGY-1) through the NRMP main match for 2006, will I start my PGY-2 training in 2006, or will it be for 2007, since it is a PGY-2.
If my current understanding is correct, the only way to continue training uninterapted is through the findaresident thingy...
Otherwise I will have to wait a year before starting PGY-2.

Also is it possible that after matching for prelim only, you decide you like the place and specialty and talk to the PD so that you continue training for PGY-2 and 3, until completion of a full categorical IM? Anyone done it or knows someone who did?

Not sure what to tell you about the match for neuro. I dont think there is a match for neuro people to start right away. I'd look around finda resident and put out as many feelers as possible. There will be positions opening up. Some because people who matched couldn't find prelim positions (I know someone who matched nuero and who is struggling to find a prelim position).

As for signing on to do a full IM resident, you can do that. However, it is up to the program to offer you a spot, which they definitely dont have to. But if you do a really good job and/or they lose an intern, they might offer it to you. I know someone who was doing a prelim surgery year and was going into anesthesia who decided he wanted to stay in surgery and his program took him into their full surgery program.

www.sfmatch.org lists unfilled positions for early match specialties (like Neuro), there are no follow up matches.

Thank you to all for posting...
