How does one go about finding a PGY 2 in a surgery program? Is there a Match somewhere or do you have to apply directly to the programs? Thats a lot of phone calls!!!

How badly do you want it? 🙂

I read on another board somewhere wherein someone sent out a cover letter with a brief summary of his background to all 240 surgery programs. He did it as a mail merge. Got 20 invitations, and was accepted, I believe, at five. So, it seems it worked.

It only takes one. 🙂

Good luck.

As NuMD97 said, you can message every program director. Another option was to go through the match and express an interest in a PGY2 slot since some programs had PGY2 spots that they aren't advertising due to attrition/etc. Some programs that require research might even be willing to take you as a PGY1 and waive some research time so that you end up being part of the year above you for manpower reasons.

2 websites you can also check are:
Association of Program Directors in Surgery Residency Clearinghouse

American Medical Association's Residency Clearinghouse (Surgery page)
<a href="http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7003.html" target="_blank">http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7003.html</a>

Disclaimer: I make no claim as to their accuracy or how up-to-date these services are, I've just heard of them and checked them up today for this post.

Finally, I take it you are a prelim PGY-1 now, assuming you are doing well, don't forget that your program director is your greatest resource. The PD and your chairman on the phone will find more positions that would actually consider you than any other method.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help. Actually I'm looking ahead to next year as right now that is the situation I am going to have to address. Just haven't seen much on programs that offer PGY-2. Once again thanks for the help.
