Does anyone know of any inside information regarding PGY-3 psychiatry residency open positions that will be begin in July 2007?

I am very unhappy at my program, and I have checked the APA website for openings, but it seems that PGY-2 and PGY-4 openings are mostly posted. The openings of the APA website are far and few between. This is as good as any evidence out there that psychiatry is becoming a more popular specialty. Is it that tough to find a PGY-3 opening?

I am so desperate to leave after this year, that I would contemplate repeating my PGY-2 year, just so I can get into another program without sitting out for a substantial period of time. Would a program even consider this option of allowing me to repeat my PGY-2 year?

Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks.

can you PM me which program this is you are getting out of?

Sorry to hear you're not happy at your program. If it's any consolation, the PGY-2 year is really the hardest at most programs, and tends to be when you have the most negative feelings about your program (PGY-3 is a good cure 😉 ). I don't know much about when spots become open, but it seems early in the year for programs to know that they'll have an open PGY-3 spot.

Keep in mind there's a rule that you have to spend at least 2 non-intern years in the same program to graduate (don't know if this is true for just psych or for all residencies)--I only know this is true b/c last year we had someone leave for PGY-3 at another residency for personal/family reasons, and then he absolutely HATED where he transferred to, and his only shot of leaving that program is to come back to us (and we don't have spots, poor guy!), or he can't graduate. So he's stuck (caveat emptor).

Good luck & hope things get better. I think programs would be willing to let you repeat a PGY-2 year if needed, but they would want to know why things were so sucky where you were that you'd be willing to do that!

Oh, the other issue that might come up in repeating a year is that since most residency positions are funded by Medicare, and programs get funding for 3 years for IM, 4 years for psych, etc--there's a strong possibility that in doing an "extra" year, the program you land at might not have funding for you to complete your final year.
