Beginning July 1st 2008, University of California, Irvine PM&R will have one PGY-3 position available. The program is affiliated with 3 main hospitals: UCI Medical Center in Orange, Long Beach VA Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Beginning your PGY-3 year, you will be based at the Long Beach VA performing outpatient PM&R consults, follow-ups and EMGs. There will also be several 10 week rotations in various specialty clinics: interventional pain clinics, orthopedic clinics, wheelchair/brace, amputee, and acupuncture clinics. You will NOT be required to take call during your PGY-3 year.

During your PGY-4 year, call will be home call, 1 week at a time q 5 weeks. The majority of your year will be spent at Long Beach Memorial. There, you will rotate through the inpatient TBI, stroke, SCI, pediatric, neuro and orthopedic rehab units. The remainder of your 4th year will be spent at UCI medical center performing inpatient rehab consults. You will also rotate at the Kaiser Permanente outpatient clinics and UCI Spine Center, with further opportunities to hone your musculoskeletal, interventional, and electrodiagnostic skills. Also, during your UCI PGY-4 rotations, you may take 1 month of elective time.

For more specific information about the program, please visit: http://www.healthaffairs.uci.edu/pm&r/index.htm

The program is located in beautiful Southern California, just minutes away from world class beaches, shopping, dining, and entertainment. For those of you with families, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Sea World are no more than 1 hour away. If you want to learn how to surf, there’s no better place than Surf City USA, AKA Huntington Beach. For you high rollers with money to burn, Las Vegas is a mere 30 minutes by plane. If you’re from the east coast or up north and feel like you’re going to miss the snow, don’t worry, Big Bear Lake Resort is just 3 hours away by car. And for those of you, like myself, who love to eat, the diversity of southern California will allow you to enjoy every ethnic food imaginable.

There is always something new and exciting to do in Southern California and the great thing about our specialty is that we WILL have time to have fun. So, if you want to work hard, but you also want to play hard, then UC Irvine PMR is the program for you.

If interested in applying to the program, please contact Shane Wen, our residency coordinator at (714) 456-6444 or [email protected]. She, yes SHE, will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
