pgy1 consult in ER

im working in the ER right now and at my program there are obviously lots of ER issues for ortho and a pgy1 comes down and makes the dispo - whether the pt. needs a fracture walker cast or if the images show a surgical case etc. am i missing something here? is the pgy1 probably backed up by someone? just curious how it works because otherwise i'm impressed the three week fresh intern is able to do all of this. just curious.

Quit second guessing the orthopod, as s/he is obviously superior in intellect, strength, and handsomeness. Don't be a hater. This isn't "brain" surgery. If they were sick enough to NEED an admit, trauma would have been called to see them, or it's a no-brainer admit like a hip fx or pilon, or something of that ilk. The fact is, most ortho stuff can be managed as an outpatient. Oh, he probably also reviewed the xrays with an upper level who gave him/her the instructions to "send 'em home, unless the fracture is open or too swollen."
