I was just wondering if first year residents interview or give input on applicants that are being interviewed for a future residency position? Are they on the selection committee generally?

Thanks!

Depends on the program. At ours, yes, PGY-1s give input on interviewees; they may interview if so inclined, but it usually conflicts with their schedule. But it's program dependent.

At places I interviewed, I only saw PGY-1s at one of them ... during the pre-interview dinner. That program also had a very cush intern year, unlike most other progs I interviewed.

At our program, only seniors were on the selection committee. With regards to providing 'input', there was a generally open invitation for any resident to talk to the program director (eg., "if you see an applicant start table dancing at the pre-interview dinner, tell me", "if there is anyone you think would be a particularly good fit for our program, please feel free to contact me", etc).

In my experience, PGY-1s are rarely directly involved in a selection committee. However most programs are close-knit families, and if you make a lasting impression (either good or bad) on a PGY-1, the selection committee is going to hear about it and factor that in.
