I'm starting to research residency programs, and would appreciate someone clarifying the application process for programs that require completion of PGY1. For example, dermatology programs require completion of PGY1, but I've seen statistics on acceptance rates for PGY1 and PGY2. Thanks for any info!

Sometimes, a program in a specialty that typically doesn't start until the PGY-2 year will incorporate an internship at the same or a nearby institution, allowing a student to apply and move only once.

Depends on the specialty. For some you just match and they include the intern year at that institution. For others you have to interview (and rank) prelim/transitional years separately from the PGY2 onward residency. Different residencies vary about whether you need to do a surgical intern year, medical intern year, or transitional year (or any of the above). If you do match into the prelim year but not the categorical residency, you can reapply for a PGY2 position while you are completing your intern year

Most derm programs start at PGY-2 requiring you to apply to for a one year PGY-1 spot and an advanced spot.

There is a minority of derm programs that start at PGY-1.

Derm, Radiology, Optho, Rad-Onc, and Anesthesia are some of the common specialties that usually require you to apply to both PGY-1 positions (prelim medicine for example) and then their advanced PGY-2 position
