PGY2 positions in Surgery

Hi All. I know it is early and I am just starting my PGY 1 year in sugery as a prelim.....but how does one go about finding out how the application process works for getting a categorical PGY 2 position in surgery? I don't even know where to start! Any leads? Thanks in advance.

Start looking around next spring & have your program director or chairman make some inquiries. There are usually dozens of PGY-2 spots that come open then.

There's so much paperwork involved. From what I've seen it's best to start gathering your information in the fall and start making your inquiries then. I've seen positions, albeit not in surgery, fill their vacancies for the following year, as early as January, even though most PGY-2 positions oftentimes become available in May or June.
