Hi Everyone,

I am a doctor from India, right now I am in California and planning to further my education in the field of vision sciences. As I am in California, Berkeley Vision Sciences is a default choice, but I am worried about my GRE scores and educational background.

I scored 1250 (500 Verbal & 750 Quant) which is not quiet an impressive score. I did my undergraduation in non-traditional medicines (BAMS) and three years masters degree in ophthalmology. My GPA is 3.9 as per WES evaluation and it evaluates my degree as 'masters in Non Traditional Medicines'. I would appreciate if somebody can comment on whether my ophthalmology background and test scores will increase my chances to get into Berkeley.

Second option I am thinking about is SUNY college of optometry. So can someone comment on SUNY vision sciences? Are there any other universities which offer Ph.D. vision science?

Thanks

Your educational background is appropriate.

Your GRE score, while not stellar, should be adequate given you are an international applicant. What might be more important is your TOEFL score.

Thanks for your prompt reply. My husband being S/W Engineer, I guess my options are limited to Berkeley & SUNY. Do you have any idea about PHd program in SUNY in terms of exposure, future career opportunities & funding?

I don't know a lot about the specifics of funding at the different programs, but if there's one rule, they all differ.

Hi Masud,

Congratulations on your success for GRE! SUNY is a good University and getting into program really depends on how many applicants they have and what major you are interested in. There are at least 7-8 Universities offering Vision Science PhD.
I am a UC Berkeley student. Universities I know;
1. UC Berkeley
2. Indiana
3. Huston

Huston I guess is a good University as well easy to get in!

I was going to say that I know Indiana and Berkley have good PhD programs. IU has some excellent vision science faculty and recently increased their research space.
