What career opportunities are there for a vision scientist? Does the PhD broaden career opportunities? Or is it un- practical and only for academic enrichment?

Many optometry schools offer it, such as NOVA, NECO, SUNY, SCCO, and more.

From the 15-20 vision science PhD's I've met, it looks like you're putting yourself onto a teaching or research career track after earning your PhD. Few of the ones I know actually see patients in clinic other than for research purposes. If those are the career paths you want, then yes it opens those doors.
