Hello,
im an ophthalmology resident and i was wondring if any of you had or heard about an oversea phaco training course.
I researched on the internet and found a few in India. I was wondering if they are worth it and if you know someone or if yourself did anything like this.
here are some ophthalmologists who give these courses but are not known as international authors of books and articles and others who are. The firsts give "cheaper" courses. Do you think this may be relevant or do these, having the surgical curriculum of hundreds/thousands of phaco surgries, be as good in teaching as the seconds?
Thanks alot

India is a good option to learn phacos.

It has a good ophthalmology infrastructure geared up for high-volume
camp surgeries.

In case if you are wondering what it means, let me clarify for you. India has
a huge backlog of cataracts and government alone is hardly making
any dent. So private hospitals ave taken up the cause and are doing
remarkable good-quality job at extremely low cost.

Aravind Eye Hospital was one of the pioneers in this strategy.

I would also suggest you at the Anjali Eye Center at Howrah, India.

Hope this helps.

Jay

Where are you doing your residency? Does your residency not provide you with enough surgical experience that you need to look for it elsewhere? How long are these courses and do you work with pig eyes or simulators only?

Just curious.

Just realized this is a 3 year old post...anyone know how to delete a comment!!!

Had been to a 2 week course at Agarwal Eye Hospital in Chennai, India. Operated on 50 human eyes in 2 weeks.. First 10 or so supervised then you are on your own. Not bad at all.

Just wanted to revive this thread to see if anyone had additional suggestions for training centers in India. Looking for a week to refresh my phaco skills, as I have already completed residency.

Has anyone used *******

Also, if anyone has any contacts at the other hospitals that would be really helpful. Please feel free to PM me as well.

Thank you

Hey there - no I never actually heard from them. Luckily, I ended up going to a hospital through a friend's contact. However, they stopped taking foreign trainees as they have a program sponsored by Alcon now for national trainees.

In any case, I'd recommend going to a place like Aravind or LV Prasad. You need to plan very early as you need to register with the national medical registry now.

On another note, if you have no experience doing cataract surgery (ie medical school), please do not look at India as a place to practice/learn. The people you operate on are very poor and the cataracts are not easy. If something goes wrong the consequences are far worse for the patient and family, as there are no public support services. It isn't fair to the patients or the doctors there, as you will leave after a few weeks.

Consider going to India, or Nepal, to learn SICS AFTER you are comfortable with your surgical skills. That is something not really taught in the US and could prove useful.

And to the SDN Mod, how was my original post SPAM or an AD? Please stop censoring us unnecessarily.
