hello fellow pre-pharmers,

im trying to approach my personal statement, but find myself stuck and confused as to how to approach the whole thing. I was wondering if someone knew of any sample essays that might be useful in igniting my own thought process.

thanks

Maybe they should change the name from personal statement to something else.

i think they just want to know a blurb about who you are and why you want to get into pharmacy school and why you should get into pharmacy school.

I really dont think its meant to be an enigmatic type of question

I was having the same problem when I was writing my personal statement. If you look under the faq's, someone posted a website that helps you w/personal statements. ALso, I typed in Pharmacy Personal Statements in google and it gave me a couple of sentences. Talking to someone that already wrote a personal statement is also helpful. At the Pharmacy I'm volunteering at, there was a Pharmacy student during her internship and it was helpful to know the basic ideas of what she wrote in her personal statement, even though her situation did not apply to mine. The thing that I suggest is mapping out why you want to get into Pharmacy school. It helps you see your ideas on paper and get them into words for when you start writing.

This is how I approached my personal statement for one of my supplemental applications (i wrote about my volunteer experience).

1. what/ who inspired me

2. what did I do about it (i decided to specifically volunteer at a chldren's hospital)

3. what were my tasks while I was there

4. what did I learn from the experience and what do you hope other people learned from you.

5. how will you apply this experience to pharmacy school/a pharmacy career.

honestly, they realy want to hear that you have leadership skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, empathy etc, so it worked out well for me when I talked about the cfhildren's hospital

leadership = im a lot older than the children, so although I didn't specifically organize any programs while I was there, I was a leader by presenting myself as a positive role model (think outside the box)

interpersonal skills = not only did I have to talk to patients, I had to talk to hospitalized children that were patients. Things I learned from this was knowing to always kneel down to the level of the child when speaking to them. I also had to talk to nurses, doctors, child specialists to report how the children were doing

empathy = i talked about a specific experience I had with a patient

instead of mentioningin 10 millioin things in your essay, try getting down to the specifics to mold your paper and work around the specific to incorporate the "things they want to hear"

hope this helps.

excellent advice  current applicants, please follow 38ctk's format when discussing volunteering activities...too many times i read people's PS where they *show* why pharmacy by going on and on (and on) about all the finest details of their volunteering experiences as opposed to *stating* why pharmacy & supporting it with volunteering examples by addressing questions 1-5 (being concise is good! highlights keypoints)
