hi, i recently decided to go pharm and was wondering if it was worthwhile to pursue a pharm technician certification. how long does one usually last? i'm in th LA area..are there good short cheap programs I can take if I decide to go for it? thanks

Honestly, from what I have seen working in retail in San Francisco I would say it is not worth it. Up here, the programs take at least 9 months if at a private school, and longer at community college. The private ones seem to be a huge rip-off and my manager says that he has never had a graduate from the one here in the city who has been well prepared for the job. So I would definitely not lay out $9000-$15,000 dollars on a program. Maybe the CC ones are better or cheaper, but I think that if you are already taking the pharmacy pre-reqs your best bet is just to get a job as a clerk, tell them you are interested in pharmacy school, and let them train you. I think you need to work 1500 hours and then you can apply for a tech certificate from the state. I have only been at my job since June and I am essentially a tech because I have shown them I am interested and competent. I almost never stand at the register anymore. And, if you alredy have a college degree you can get certified in CA just by filling out some forms and not taking one of those classes.

California Pharmacy Technician Registration Application: http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/pdfs2/tch_application_pkt.pdf

They list the requirements starting on page 2.

If you're not a science degree holder, you might want to check local JCs for pharm tech training programs. Or, as azpremed suggests, have an employer train you.

I agree w/AZ and LV. Most of the peeps i knew that didn't have a BS, just clerked until they had enough hours for certification. Moreover, you don't have have to be a legitimate tech to get the experience of being a pharm tech. You'll get plenty of experience as a clerk.

thanks guys! i'm still relatively new in "discovering" this area of pursuing pharmacy. 🙂

Hi I was thinking of becoming a pharm tech before my graduate classes start next year. i was wondering what I need to become one, and why most of you say that you need to take classes at a CC? Can't I just study for the certifacation exam myself and take the test?

You're from Texas, croco? I think Texas does require you to take the national certification exam to become a CPhT (certified pharmacy technician), in order to get licensed as a pharm tech. California and a bunch of other states don't have that exam requirement.

I suppose you can study for it yourself. Just FYI, Houston CC Southeast campus has a pharm tech program:

Thanks for your reply LVPharm. I was just wondering if it is "required" today to take those classes in order to work as a pharm technician. Continuall people are telling me "yes" and "no" over and over again, so I really need a clear answer on what is going on. And yes I am from Texas (Houston).

In Texas you do not have to be certified to work as a tech. However, it can be easier to find a job if you are (some pharmacies won't even consider hiring non-certified technicians) and the pay is usually a bit more. Some pharmacies will hire you without being certified but will then require that you take the test within so many months (they'll pay for it though). And no, it is not required that you take any classes.

Hey croco,

I'm also from Texas and I am studying for the PTCB exam on my own. A pharm advisor told me not to take the pharm tech classes and recommended I get a review book instead.

I am also on Jeanetta's study group site on Yahoo. Someone had mentioned the website on here. Just do a search or pm me.

You don't need to take the classes but I think it would be a lot easier to find a job if you did.

Edit:

Beat me to it Brill.

Thanks a lot guys:
You goys are a great help
