Hi Everyone,
I have a very improtant and urgent question to ask. I'm taking hte pharm tech test tommorow and watned to know how detailed it was with respect to pharmacology and drug names. I just took the practice and test and failed b/c I got ALL the math problems and regular pharmacy questions right but I failed b/c I missed most of the pharmacology quesitons. THere were questions such as...

1.) What is similiar to Benzodiazeprine? (Lorazepam)
2.) If you have congestive heart failure, which drug should u take? (Lanoxin)
3.) Which drugs are photosensitive? (Carabamazepine and Tetracycline)
4.) Which drug IS NOT commercially available? (Paxil 5mg tabs)

There were A WHOLE LOT MORE similar to these types of questions. So I'm wondering are there a BUNCH of questions like this on the pharm-tech test b/c many have told me to just focus on the math and general pharmacy questions. I'm worried now b/c I didn't do too good on the practice test b/c of all this pharmacology stuff. PLEASE HELP!

I don't know any drugs either, but you can do this if the ending in the multiple choice is similar those are not the answer. This will give you a 50 to a 75 percent chance to get the problem.

If you can do the math you will pass the certification exam, don't forget the passing score is pretty low. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. It's 11:30pm CT and my test is in 8.5 hrs, I think I should sleep (I was too busy watching MARCH MADNESS...GO BUCKNELL!). I pretty much have all the SIG's and conversions down so hopefully I can pass but like someone said, if it's just math and general clinical/retail ?'s then I think I should be fine. Thanks everyone and goodnight!

I just took the test yesterday and I must say it wasn't that bad at all. Everyone I took it with said they were worried about the IV calculations. I am used to these as I work in a hospital. I think that the test is geared more towards hospital pharmacy. If I worked in retail I don't think I would know as much as I did.

I took it yesterday too and I all have to say, WHAT CALCUALTIONS?!? It was 140 questions and 85% of it was generics something that my friends and people in this forum told me not to worry about, b/c they said it'd be all MATH! Oh well, can't blame anyone but myself, but thanks for everyones help anyway.

Oh...crp....

You must got the one and only...which color booklet you got?? Mine is purple and its got 50% math which would be awesome if I actually brought my calculator with me. But it went fine for me...kinda easy though compared to PCAT. Maybe 20 out of 140 questions were merely guessing b/c I was confused with the drugs name, otherwise I felt pretty confident.

I had the white book, and it was at least 50 % math, if not more. The calculations were pretty easy. Drugs names were the hardest for me.

same here, I had the yellow and the test was mostly calculations and some sigs. Very few pharmacology ?'s

I had the PINK booklet and like I said before, it was mostly generics. I was told that there were 8 different tests out there and that each test had it's own level of difficulty. If you had an easy test then your % of passing would be higher as opposed to a harder test where the % of passing would be lower. I hope I had the HARDEST test b/c it sure felt that way. Oh well, I know I got one question right, "How do you read a graduated cylinder--> bottom of the meniscus" hahahaha.

According to the PTCB all of the test colors are actually the same test, just with the questions rearranged differently. Whether or not all the experimental questions are the same in all the colors, they didnt say.

The parts of the test that seem hard to you or super easy are naturally going to be the parts you notice. For example, someone above said that they got the light purple which they thought was mostly math. I also got the light purple test, but I thought it had a lot of pharmacology/administrative questions.

Why would they make some tests randomly harder when they dont pass them out dependent on your background?

Anyhow, for me, I dont think Ill be surprised no matter how my score ends up. I honestly couldnt tell how I did. But I found out later that the passing value is less than I thought it was (I thought it was >76%) so I may have done good after all.
