I think it happened when someone mentioned an really high salary for Dipiro. I'm an inadequate self-editor, posted and then the thread went all wacky. 😳
For those interested, www.aacp.org publishes a survey of faculty around the nation in different pharmacy disciplines, private and publics schools, calender and academic year appointments, faculty rank and their salaries at the average, 25%, 50%, and 75% (percentile) ranking. It is around a 75 page document. It is this document that most pharmacy faculty base their salaries on.
I believe the last survey was published in 2005 but a new one many be coming out soon.
But some positions have become much more competitive than others due to the availability of positions and the increasing number of programs around the country.

Im trying to gauge my salary offer to work at a major nuclear pharmacy chain, so if anybody has recieved an offer or currently holds a position in nuclear your input would be greatly appreciated. Here's my situation: 100 to start plus about an extra 5 thousand per year in the form of call in bonuses (the way this was explained to me was that you will have a certain amount of time per month your on call in which you will be paid per prescription to come in even if its part of your regular 40 hour work week?).
I'm a little weary of the whole situation because it seems some staff nuclear pharmacists well exceed retail salaries and some don't.

I would appreciate any input in this survival guide for the new graduate or soon to be..( no matter the setting)what to look for in an job offer/a company..beyond the salary.
1) look for higher 401 K company matches
2) Lunch break..do you get any if so how long
3) staffing, how many pharmacists will be working with you, back up plans?
4) Technology used, softwares
5) Vacation, when? how often? holidays ( which ones) paid vs non paid
6) Sick days. Does the company have them or not, if yes how many?

What a beautiful baby! Congrats on almost being finished with pharmacy school. I will be applying early decision for Fall 2008, and I had some questions for you. I am an older student having worked in my profession for 5 years already. Currently, I am unmarried with zero children, but I do desire a family in the next few years. How difficult was it for you? - marriage, pregnancy, etc...while maintaining good grades in pharmacy school. Am i insane to be thinking I can "have it all"?
I won't graduate until 2009. I am still uncertain of the setting I will be going to. I am not closed to the hospital setting. I have been working retail since I am 15y/o.

Yeah, but you have to live in New Jersey. That's, like, base salary divided by 10, so it's really barely over minimum wage.

In Motown, they make about $95-ish. In the Eastern Ubermetroplex, it is probably more.
I know you asked for specific areas but for what its worth our DI guy at school said he made about 85 + about an extra 5-10 doing some projects on the side. It appeared to be a pretty laid back job too. He taught 1 class a semester and helped with some faculty projects. The rest of the time was spent overseeing students on rotation and complaining about how he was not a morning person.
A pharmacologist's pay varies according to their setting. In terms of deciding between the both, a pharmacologist require a phd which means they are reserach orientated while a pharmacist requires a pharmD meaning they are clinical orientated. Most people will say a pharmacist will have better job opportunies. However if you want to know which one is better, you have to ask yourself what you want in your job.
Your friend is nuts (I can say that safely because I do KNOW dentists can be nuts!).
Do a search of the pharmacy forums - not pre-pharm & you'll find the salary range.
But, from my own experience, as a pharmacist in N CA, I make six figures & if my dentist called me crazy he'd be in deep **** 🙂p -my dentist is my husband who also gets to enjoy my health insurance benefits among other things.....)

I notice that salary.com is a little low. I wonder if part time and full time pay are weighted equally. If someone is working full time at 100k and someone is working part time at 50k, but they average them equally and say that your avg pharmD makes 75K, you can see how that skews things. And your friend is uninformed. The majority of pharmacists in my neck of the woods (Texas) working retail full time are pulling in 100K/yr. Some people working border towns are making well above 100k.
A pharmacologist fresh out of grad school (Most likely post-doc) will make about 80K/year. With a BS you are looking at 40k fresh out of school and with a masters maybe 50K. The job market is bad right now. Especially for PhD's. You may have to do a couple of post-docs to get a job.
The average is probably behind the times yes but also I bet it takes an average across the country of how much all pharmacist make (not just retail). The clinical positions etc are lagging behind in the pay increases retail has seen. It will catch up otherwise they will be hurting to find many people to fill those positions.

My wife is a Clinical Pharmacist making above 100K. He doesn't know what he is talking about...do a google on Pharmacist salaries and I am sure you will find a website dedicated to salaries in the US.
Here, about $53 an hour...you do the math.
that 80k and 100k are just averages around the country. Normally in my area its more than that. believe me just become a pharmacist with a few years of experience you;ll make alot around 120 130k. 😎

The starting salary for a PhD scientist (not an industry postdoc, usually Scientist I or something) at GlaxoSmithKline in Philadelphia is 95k-ish (Oct 2006). The starting salary for a tenure track faculty position at a research university is about 80k (Oct 2006). To get either of these jobs you will need to endure 4-7 years as a grad student (20-25k) and then probably about 2 years of postdoc for an industry position and 4-6 years for an academic position.
A postdoc with a PhD in pharmacology will earn about 36-45k in academia and 50-60k in industry. I know I just worked as an academic postdoc for all of 2006, and my industry number is based on a salary offered to me for an industry postdoc in the end of 2005. Adjust your numbers by 1 year.

You can have a very fulfilling life as a PhD scientist, but you really need to like it. Just by the numbers, pharmacy makes more sense in terms of lifetime income and certainly for quicker gratification.

Even if every pre-pharmacy acceptee was able to attend their state pharmacy school I don't think the majority of pre-pharmDs would still apply if that were the average starting salary! Tuition prices are already high and keep going up a lot each year!
I would do it if they have more pharmacists and technicians working. $45K a year is not bad if I don't have to stand all day long without a lunch break and if schooling was only 4years instead of 6-8 years. I only make 10K now and I'm living comfortably (I don't pay for car and health insurance). Then again, I know people that makes 3,4 times more than me and live from paycheck to paycheck and never seem to have enough money.
hmmm lets see....be in debt about $150,000 after pharmacy school...go through 4 years of hard work and stress during pharm school....and then only make $45,000/year? I don't think so. If it were really like that, then I'm sure we could find 100's of other jobs that don't require schooling where we could make 45K and up.
I'd love to do pharmacy, regardless of pay, but I also have to consider providing for my family. Right now I make more than that, have good benefits, and if I moved into management I could make considerably more. I don't mind what I'm doing (basically I don't loathe going to work everyday) so the pay cut then becomes worth considering. Maybe after retirement.
Though money wasn't a deciding factor in my decision to go into pharmacy, money did play a role. If pharmacy only paid $40-45,000 a year, then that would reflect a lower demand for pharmacists. I fear that job security wouldn't be as high, and job security was one of my main concerns about any career choice.

I would gladly do pharmacy for free if there was no such thing as money where everyone in the world could get anything they wanted without the need for monetary compensation. However, the reality is that we need money to support ourselves and $45,000 isn't all that great even in a state that has a lower cost of living like Nebraska.
I suppose that the lowest salary I would accept as a pharmacy school graduate would be around $60,000 to $70,000 today. That number would be higher if I was living in California any other place with a higher cost of living.
