I was talking to a Wal-Mart DM recently.

I don't remember her words verbatim, but she directly said to me, "It's not like it used to be. We can find pharmacists without a problem. So if you don't like the way we're doing things, you can leave, and we'll find a pharmacist who does."

This comes from a DM who oversees a state that is *not* especially saturated, according to the Pharmacy Manpower Project's rankings.

Incredible.

It's funny because not long after she said that, some of their pharmacists gradually quit. They haven't quite replaced all of them yet, but they're getting there.

No big surprise here. That's how boom and bust cycles work. We, as pharmacists, had the advantage for a few years because of the shortage. Now that it is over the corporations have the advantage. We are all going to have to adjust our attitudes a little. It won't be long before they are saying not only can we replace you with someone else but we can replace you with someone else who will do it for $15.00 a hour less.

Interesting times ahead.

Unionize.

Watch them **** down their pants.

Problem solved.

There is still time to organize.

You goobers need to start your own pharmacies... I'm serious. You are obviously intelligent - and are likely to complain no matter what direction the situation turns.

*uck it - throw you in there too Mikey.

Save up the cash and change pharmacy for the better.

Then they'll just lobby states to legislate that "licensed" pharmacy techs can do the jobs pharmacists can do.

Unions have backfired everywhere in the last twenty years. Just look at the state of teachers.

I am in a union. It's all good in mah hood. The corporations WILL screw you any chance they get. We are, after all, working-class, albeit well-paid. (Working class = dependent on your employment.) Pharmacists think they are pretty rich, but we are tiny compared the the corporations.

What do you like about being in a union? How much are the due's? What exactly does the union do for you?

I have never been in a union and am curious if they really good for anything. Seems totally unnecessary to me, but I would love to hear from someone who is actually in one.

On the other hand, Germany is like 70% unionized and their economy is beating our economy's ass. Their workers have a greater control over all industries, they work 1500 hours a year, and get 5 or 6 weeks of vacation. All thanks to the unions.

You have to look at the job itself. Jobs that can be outsourced in a way that capitalists can exploit third world labor...well, a union can't help too much, because they will just leave. And they'd leave whether or not a union was involved.

Now look at industries where the workers have more clout because they aren't replaced easily. Say...the NFL. There, the players' union has been a great help to the workers. Why? Because the NFL needs to keep the best happy. In the same way of thinking, pharmacists are legally needed to operate a pharmacy. They can't just outsource us. They can't hire a dude in India to do it. We still have power. But as a few million small individuals...we ain't ****. As a singular voice...they wouldn't be able to **** us over.

Due to the nature of this discussion and my strong political opinions, I sent you a PM with the information you requested. 🙂

The nursing brought in a union when I was starting as a DOP in CA. The pharm techs decided to join the union. Pharmacists laughed at the techs. I couldn't say a word about it. For 1.5 years, I could not give my techs a raise because hospital and the union were in negotiations. When it was all settled and done, techs received a $0.25 raise. I couldn't give them more money even if I wanted to. I don't know what the month dues were... but techs were out of more money than before. They couldn't do anything without the union and I couldn't do anything for the union members. Union only cared about collecting the dues. Eventually techs started to default on the union dues.

Just my experience with a union.

You interested in working with us in Washington DC area?

supply > demand...how sad when it came to early. I would have expected this in at least 2011 or so. Oh well...life goes on.

I have a very good opportunity that I'm in the running for in TX that would help my career big time. I'll know if I get the job here in a few weeks.

But if that happens to fall through...I would consider anything. And DC is a cool town. I've always dug the Taxation Without Representation plates. 👍

Isn't your congressman the ironically named non-neoliberal politician Adam Smith?

You guys don't get senators though. Which is a giant pile of bull****.

Where do you work, anyway? I'd love a union job. I know a guy that has a union job with Medco up in Yinzer. He's freakin' got it made.

Dude I freaking LOVE your avatar, Stringer Bell was by far my favorite character on that show (am I an ---hole for routing for him?)... at the end of the 3rd season I was so upset with his fate that I boycotted the 4th season for a quite a while. Needless to say I eventually caved in and watched it...

Stringer is a lot of people's favorite.

Not mine, personally...

Omar your guy?

My favorite character?

Omar is up there.

I like Bodie, Bubbles, Chris Partlow, too. Perhaps I am the pharmacy version of McNulty. I've got the "hatred of authority" and "recurring epic self destruction with a general lack of desire for self-preservation" thing down really well.

LOL, right on with the McNulty comparison.
