Yes there are a lot of these opportunities. Many of the ones who do this have done further training (ie residency, fellowship, phd) and become experts or thought leaders in their given specialty. PharmDs have many of the same opportunities as physicians do for consulting work. You could also be a consultant for the FDA or CDC or other government agency. And yes you can make very good money. I think zpak may do something like this.

Jay -

Opportunities for pharmacists working as consultants has been discussed here before; you can probably find some good info by doing a search...and you'll be sure to find everything from legit career opportunities (possibly) to the serious conflicts of interest posed if you decide to give in to working for a drug company as a consultant in order to "make bank". 👎

This is what you consider an innovative "thought process" worthy of being shared with all on these message boards? Wow. What aspirations you young ones have these days.

Here is a recent example of a Pharmacist that got out there and made some "bank." You may be able to visit him on weekends and holidays for insight on how he got into consulting.....

As stated before, you can be consultant for many other organization (ie government, and hospitals) other than big pharma. Just dont consult for big pharma and be a director of pharmacy. If you are gonna consult for these companies dont put yourself in a position where you make formulary or treatment decisions. This is a major conflict of interest. Go make some bank.....

Jay,

Give your thought process a chance to elaborate on the following points.

  • Consultant PharmD possess special and valuable knowledge most PharmDs don't.
  • What special and valuable knowledge do you think you'll have as a PharmD without additional training and knowledge.
  • Consultants have to market themselves. Do you have marketing skills?
  • What will you do while you don't have a consulting gig in between?
  • Consultants I know usually have 20 to 30 years of experience.. can you work 20 to 30 years as a pharmacist to gain the experience before you market yourself as a consultant?
Or are you talking about being a Medical Science Liason? To be a MSL, you need additional training..residency, fellowship...some working experience. Yet, I would hate to be a MSL pushing 1 or 2 drugs...then get laid off when your drug becomes generic.

Hi guys thank you for your replies...i see some of the people are not pleased with my question and i apologize for that... first of all i am just a second year student in pharmacy school and so far all i hear about is most of the pharmacy students either go to retail right after school or do residency and then go to hospital...so to me all i see is there are only two things you can do with a pharmD degree hospital or retail (i know this is not true but that is all i know). so i am just looking for more options and pharmaceutical company consultant sounds pretty interesting so that is the reason i asked the question. so once again i apologize for any stupid question...
hopefully no hard feelings...🙂

Rutgers has a nice 2 year industry fellowship, I have two friends that went this route and are now MSL's...they seem to be enjoying it.
