Hi guys,
You've probably been reading some of my woes about trying to find a job from a few of my previous posts. While I'm applying, I'm trying to figure out what I may be doing wrong and if the application process is really as tedious as the situation I have been through. Since many of you work, I was wondering if I could have some insight based on whatever I can tell you about my experience (specifically CVS)
The store nearest to my house has always said they can accomodate another intern. I called the district intern manager (about two years ago) who was impossible to get in touch with. I called him three times and e-mailed him three times in the course of two months until finally I got ahold of him. Basically, he told me a time around which we could have an interview. When I called back, I found out he doesn't work for CVS anymore. He left the number of the new person to contact, and when I called that number, the lady gave me an e-mail of her associate who I could get in touch with. Her associate was not responding, even after follow-up e-mails, so I e-mailed the lady again to ask for a telephone number where I could reach this associate at. She didn't give me the phone number and told me e-mail's only the best way to get in touch with her.
The associate didn't e-mail me for the third time, so I asked this lady again what I should do and she seemed kind of annoyed (I think that finally got the associate to e-mail me back). Finally, I got an interview about a month later for the intern position, but the associate lady had another guy substitute for her. So in the interview, what I can remember is that he was concerned I had no previous experience (I kind of went in assuming the whole purpose of the internship was to gain this experience component). Then I briefed him on volunteering activities that were associated with medical service and also mentioned some personal experiences which he seemed most interested about. Weeks later, I didn't get a response and followed up. They told me they had more qualified applicants fill the positions they needed. When I went to the CVS near my house, they STILL told me they had the capacity to allow another intern to work. I followed up and asked why they are saying that and they told me positions are based on seats available for graduating class, so apparently there were no more available seats for my class (I was already a P2 by this time). In my follow-up, I also mentioned that I completed my IPPE and further volunteering.
I kind of gave up that idea for a while, but some people who I have spoken to told me they got jobs even after my follow-up. I re-applied, e-mailed them about my previous application, but they're saying in order for me to be considered, I have to apply and interview all over again.
The only reason I have been aggressive is because months were going by and I was not getting responses back (unless I followed up every week). I'm not sure if that negatively has painted the picture of me, but I don't know any other way to move along the application process. My questions based on my account are:
1. Is it worth it to still attempt to get a job with CVS, which would be in the middle of my P3 year? (I have been applying to other companies as well, unsure of how soon they would employ me as well, given I get the job)
2. Is there something else that could be done that I haven't quite done yet?
2. How does this system work in terms of getting a job based on your graduating class, etc.? I feel like almost everybody in my class who applied for CVS got the job.
3. Any other tid-bits you can provide from your own experiences?
*Because a lot of you are asking, I have applied/still trying to apply to Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and hospitals, even before CVS. Since they are more individual based, I'm contacting more managers to different stores from the same company/branch. However, it looks like with CVS, I can't get a job at any store unless I go through this district process first, and CVS are more widespread in my state/locale than other stores.
