Hi i was wondering if anyone can give me some information on retail scholarships. I have heard some retail chains give students scholarships if they work for them a certain number of hours every week and to sign a contract agreeing to work for that chain after graduation. How would you go about getting this? applying online at their websites usually dont work or dont get any response. any information is appreciated.

yes this happened about 10 years ago. Gone now. Sorry dude.

A horrible scam against students by retail pharmacy. You take 4 years worth of a scholarship/loan (~2k/year) from a company and you have to work 4 years with them after you graduate. If you don't work the 4 years, than you pay back the ~8-10k in a lump sum. A classmate of mine who hates retail had to turn down a great hospital position because Wags had her hooked for 10k and she couldn't afford that big of a hit all at once.

The ship has sailed. Where were you 8 years ago?

Things were good when they wanted you.

  1. Generous relocation bonus $5-10k, they even hire a mover for you
  2. Sign on bonus yearly $10-15k
  3. Paid travel Mileage for your commute!
  4. Wine and dine you
  5. Took you to CA Disneyland trying to recruit you (CVS)
  6. BMW leases
  7. Quit one company to join another and still maintain your seniority benefit
  8. Move & quit anytime you want without worrying that there is "no" jobs
  9. Retail scholarship
  10. Daily meal $$$
I could go on forever... Ivy league techies/MBA get this now. Not pharmacists.

When you are making $8/hr, $10k sounds like a lot. After you start working as a pharmacist, you realize how stupid taking $10k (~2 months pay) vs a good job is...

I dunno I don't think its a scam. If your company pay for your mba they usually make you sign a contract to stay 5 yrs or pay the tuition back. Its normal

There is a big difference between a company fully funding someone's MBA in exchange for a contract of a certain length, and a pharmacy chain offering a 2 to 4K "scholarship" in exchange for a contract. It's not like they are paying for the entire PharmD. Their "scholarship" won't even pay half of tuition at most schools. It's a ripoff.

Is there any other options that can help get through the last two years of pharm school? I heard the last two years is no grants it is just loans and your own cash. i have heard of some banks that give student college loans with cheaper interest than the FAFSA loans. are there other loan options or outside scholarships?

Yes, it's call the Bank of Mom and Dad.

I actually may be of help here. If your workplace gets serviced by McKesson, you are eligible to apply for a $1000/year scholarship from them.

There are usually small scholarships you can apply for, but I think the norm is student loans for the majority of the cost.

Two? Try four.

Unless you're in one of those odd things where the school considers you undergrad for P1 year if you do 2+4. Then it's the final 3 years.

no my school is 6 years straight you dont have to take pcat you are automatically guaranteed a seat in the graduate years. The school considers only the last 2 years grad
