For a pharmacy intern??? How is that possible to pay that low? I was started at 11.50 hourly at a hospital, then moved up to 13.00 with a 2 dollar increase on weekends.
It's weird. And it doesn't fit with normal VA pay scales. I'm guessing it's some sort of weird locality thing they got approved somehow. Plus, that job description is pharmacy TECHNICIAN work, so I'm not sure how they are going to avoid running afoul of their union, which could possibly complain about replacing a more highly paid tech with an intern being paid a pittance.
That is so wrong to make someone work for that low of pay. At least give 10-12 an hour but 8 something? It makes me sad to hear about how low technicians are paid and all the crap they put up with working in a pharmacy.
VA techs make a lot more than that. That's why I think this is suspect and will probably get them in trouble with the tech's union.
Dude, we were talking about going to the grocery, right? If you have live in child care, why is your wife even taking the baby to the store with her? Doesn't the baby stay home with the mother in law? And why is Granny in the back seat? Why not ride up front? Unless the grocery trip requires you, your wife, Granny AND the baby? 😕.
She barely speaks english and doesn't drive, so grocery shopping is about the only time she gets out. I have to go along to carry the baby and move the heavy stuff like bags of rice. (and to stop my wife from ever using 'you don't do xyz' excuse.)
Oh ok. I didn't know that techs have a union

This story just gets more and more interesting... neither your wife nor your MIL can lift the baby? Or are you telling me that the baby has to be carried at all times? That sounds fun... If that's true, I feel bad for you guys. How old is the baby? My son sits in the cart and flirts with all the women in the store.
And not to mention tiring as hell too. I didn't get any shopping done going out with him! 🙄OMG. Always leave babies and children at HOME when you go out. In fact it's best to go out alone.

I babysit my cousin's 3 yo son ONE time...I went to the mall with him...it was a NIGHTMARE COME TRUE! 😱
OMG. I have no idea taking a kid out in public will be that big of a disaster. And not to mention tiring as hell too. I didn't get any shopping done going out with him! 🙄
If you guys are smart you will always leave the kids at home or at your mother's house when you need to go out.
I am never taking kids out again after that nightmare experience.
No, that's the wrong approach. The key is to take the kids out everywhere starting when they are really little so they get used to it and know how to act. We took both of our kids shopping, to family friendly restaurants, etc. from the time they were babies and had no problems. It's the kids who are coddled, always stay at home with Grandma or a sitter, who have to be carried everywhere, who won't stay in the stroller, who are always given whatever they want, that turn into huge BRATS who don't know how to act in public.
That said, there are some limits. Very young children don't belong in fancy restaurants, in bars (outside of meal times if the bar has a restaurant) or in the movie theater unless it's a kids movie. And I wouldn't start taking a kid to the movies until at least age 2, when he or she can actually pay attention to the movie and enjoy it.
My son is great when we go out places. He is friendly and cute and loves to "talk" to people. People seem to find him cute and charming as well. Well except for the child-haters, but we ignore those people. Last night my husband and I took the baby to dinner with us at Q'doba. Afterwards, hubby went next door to get a haircut and the baby and I went to the grocery that's in the same shopping center. He sat in the cart and drank his water from his sippy cup and was just fine.
See, you start off reasonable...Definitely agree with the movie thing, but I'd say more like age 4-5 for that.
But then you dial it up to eleven...Some of the people who went to the Batman movie for the midnight screening in Aurora had no business bringing their kids with them.
I also don't like it when parents bring infants and toddlers on a plane. If they must, the law should be that the infant and toddler be sedated for the duration of the flight.
Do you plan on having children SHC? Honest question. Most people don't overly stress about the physical changes that come with child-bearing. I picture you as someone who would.

He would cry and SCREAM very loudly if you don't buy him what he wants. He owns soooooo MANY toys that he could open his own Toys R Us. I kinda do...hehehe...Babies are cute (when they are GOOD)...maybe just one baby boy....will be so cute.😀
I'll try to exercise more...I hope it will work. haha..
That's a good point. Never thought about that.
My cousin's son is very spoiled.
He will not stop running around the entire mall. He would go inside a toy store and grab a toy and refuse to let it go...then his mom would have to buy it for him or he will never leave the store! Same with candy and all other stuff.
He grab a toy when I was shopping with him. I bought the toy but my cousin paid me back afterwards. He would cry and SCREAM very loudly if you don't buy him what he wants.
He will also run around everywhere and refuse to listen to you.
He is also pretty violent too...he likes to throw things around...he hit his grandparents (my aunt and uncle) with his toys all the time before...(hopfully getting better now)
Maybe the kid needs Adderall? 😕

No, he needs an a**whooping with a belt or switch.
PharmB, do you REALLY think children belong in a midnight screening of a movie? I don't. certainly not young children. Although I'm not sure at what age it might begin to be appropriate. Not infants, not toddlers and not preschoolers/early elementary age. IMO.

I mean what the hell? This ******* is gonna ruin it for everyone by offering to volunteer pharmacist work.

Assuming you bring in $250k+ and spending $7k/mo, saving ~5k/mo is still very respectable. Yep, best time to save is when you have no kids or right after they leave the house. To raise a kid from 0-17 years, it has been estimated to cost around $300k.
At the very minimum, everyone should at least max their 401k/403b/tsp account. For pharmacists, that is saving 15% of your gross income to max 401k invested in low cost index fund. This action alone will give you a good chance of having ~$5M after 40 years.
my baby is almost always an angel in public but the process of bringing her and all of the baby accouterments deters me from wanting to go out with her. The simplest of errands is just not at this point. It irks me when adults have adult expectations from children. People that drag their kids through the store when it is clearly the kid's nap or dinner time (no wonder the kid is crying!). People that take their kids to weddings or other events that are totally and completely boring when you're a tot. How do you expect them to act?
I do want to fly a couple of places with her but that would make me one of "those people" that I gave the side eye to when I would fly in my pre-child days!
My son is just over a year old. Started walking about 2 months ago. He won't stay in the stroller for more than 15-30 minutes before fighting and crying.. So while my wife and MIL go gaga on the shopping, I get to hold the baby (now it's more like chasing after him). Of course also when it comes to the rice bag, loading and off loading the car. You know, I the usual used and abused husband stuff.![]()
My son is a cute devil.,o
He loves to go out. Would fetch his shoes and run to me every time I go towards the door. The problem is he is unrestrained and stubborn, go were he wants to, get into whatever he wants, and won't take no for an answer.
Uh huh... Did you read SHC's post about the 3 year old in the mall? That's what you are in for if you don't start setting limits and enforcing them. My son is the same age and will stay in the cart no problem. When he walks, he stays with me and holds my hand. You are the parent and it's your job to teach appropriate behavior. Did your wife ever let you back in the bed or is she still sleeping with the baby?
I am a believer of harsh discipline, but my wife and MIL do not share that desire or concerns. Besides, I have less time after work with the baby than they do, nor am I in a position to tell 2 women how to raise kids.
Honestly, I'm somewhat concerned, but I don't really know what to think. Every baby is different, and what we were as kids don't always translate into adulthood. My parents say I was tossed out of 5 day cares because they couldn't handle me, but I grew up to be someone who follow rules. So I hope that's just a little piece of me in him.
P.S my wife and I are back on our beds now, he's in the crib. Our son wake up crying from having nightmares once a while and need to sleep with us, but mostly we don't.

If there's one thing I am willing to splurge on it, it's vacations. Went to Cancun and will be going to Japan soon. Next up is Europe, Australia, and eventually Antarctica! The only big expense I've had besides trips is my car. But I was able to haggle down to $3000 under Edmunds TMV so it was a good decision for me. My previous car was an 1988 Taurus which was crapping out
I can honestly say that, if someone came to me with a choice between:
A - Being able to have sex with any woman I want any time I want.
B - Being able to have and drive any car I want at any time I want.
I'd choose the cars.
Just tell us the truth. It's really because the cars don't ask you to cuddle afterwards.
Well yeah the no cuddle afterwards is definitely true. Besides, if I roll up to some nightclub here in New York City in a Bugatti Veyron, I'm pretty sure I'd get laid.

sad women really fall for that rolling up to a club in a sports car crap.
Can't say I've never tried to impress a lady with fancy things though. Flowers, dinner at a high end restaurant, fancy bottle of wine, moonlit walk, listening to sexy music by the fire...
But the kind of women I've wooed aren't the ones that sit at a club and wait for Sparda to roll up. Just sayin'.... What if someone rolls up in a better car, better suit, etc.? Your lady friend might bail.

A guy told me if he had the option of
A) Never smoke again and have sex with any woman he wants.
or
B) Never have sex again and smoke for the rest of his life.
He would pick B) 😱 I guess smoking feel really good...
Well cars are nice of course but it's a POOR way to tell how much money a person is worth.
Anyone can borrow money and put themselves in HIGH DEBT to drive a nice car. That isn't rich at all.
My little sister worked at Bank of America before she started law school. She told me the bank account of 4 million dollars belong to a guy that drives a very old honda civic...he will always have tons of boxes in his car too. He will never dress up so if you see him he just looks like some average guy on the street.
She also remember a bank account of a guy driving a Porche being $200 too. 🙄 How rich is that?
Like I say...here in America people LOVE to borrow money and TONS of money....we all love debt so practically ANYONE can borrow money to buy a expensive ass car and have $10 in their bank account.
Actually I don't keep most of my money in a bank account. It's either in the safe deposit box or a fire-proof, flood-proof, high security safe in my house.

Time to find out where you live and send some really nice people to your house!

My mom told me I should do that! LOL...
But I want my money to EARN INTEREST. So I prefer to at least put it in a CD or if not invest it in something to MAKE more money.
Don't you want to make more money with your money?

Probably one of the reason why Civic guy has $4M is because he is not the guy who drives a Porche. Millionaires tend to look really average. OTOH, the next guy who is all flashy will barely have anything... Read The Millionaire Next Door. Really good book you can get a used one for 0.01 cent + shipping.
People don't think about live style creep.
1. Get a new BMW/Porsche/Maserrati
2. Now you have to buy a nice clothes... can't let anyone know if you buy your clothes from Goodwill/Ross/Walmart/Target...
3. Gotta eat a high class restaurant
4. Gotta get a big house to compliment with the car
5. Gotta get $10k watches and latest Iphone/Ipad
6. Can't downgrade lifestyle now... what are people going to think of me? That I am in deep **** financially?
7. Repeat the cycle every 5 years... now you end up broke at 65 years old
Compare this to someone who looks average, he does not have to keep up with the Joneses and he will be able to tuck away more $$$.
Yeah, my taxable income I'd put into the bank to grow interest. But the cash I get from working independents, hell no because there's a chance you can get audited.
I mean, if you're just gonna save up all that money, what's the point? Just give it all away to your family when you die?
Buy experience not stuff...

I think that I wanna see a SHC-Sparda hookup.
When do a person get audited? When they feel you have too much money? lol
