I hear a good number of student drop out of pharmacy schools, are most of them P1 students who couldn't handle the curriculum?

And also, just how much more difficult is pharmacy school compared to undergrad? (my undergrad is at UCSD, pharm chem major)

The reason for dropping out is as varied as individual people. Health problems, family issues, life directions, and many more could all be reasons that someone chooses to leave... Also the temperment of the school must also be taken into account. Newer schools tend to hold onto each and every student. Whereas some schools teach through attrition - desiring to remove the weaker portion of each class.

Best practice - if you are considering a school - talk to students who go there now (search is your friend). This will help you gauge how well you may fit in a school's particular culture.

Academics in pharmacy school are the same difficulty as undergrad - but you get a LOT more of it. You will adjust accordingly. Trust me, if you can own biochem or organic - you can own pharmacy school.

Not sure how it is at other schools, but we have a very very small amount of students in their first year drop out; and most of them are not because they couldn't handle the curriculum, but because they had career changes, professionalism issues, family life issues (deaths or pregnancies, etc).

Pharmacyyyy school drop outttttt  go back to high school....

.... oh wait.
LOL...I was thinking the same thing.

As was said above, academics in pharmacy school are about the same as undergrad. The only difference is there is a lot more information to know. If you manage your time wisely, you shouldn't have a problem with the academics.

Also, I'm a first year student and so far we haven't had anyone drop out so far, and I don't expect anyone in our class will drop out. We had a couple of people not pass a class, but they are going to re-take that class and continue with pharmacy school.

People drop out of pharmacy school b/c they no longer want to be a pharmacist anymore.

I dropped dental school because I didn't want to become a dentist.

People FAIL out if they can't handle the workload...there is a difference.

I think you might be talking about kids in pharmacy programs, but even pharm program kids stay in it. I'm in a 0-6 year program and I'm thinking about switching to something else...I actually don't even remember applying for this program. I got in during my school's freshman orientation. I know it's a blessing to be in such a program, but I didn't want to commit to a career upon entering college and when I shadowed a pharmacists, I couldn't convince myself that this is something I ultimately want to do. But if you like it and are sure about it, you shouldn't feel pressured to drop pharmacy. If you are commited, just do it. You'll be good 🙂.
