I'm a 3rd year pharmacy student in NYC. For the past few weeks I've been applying for clinical internship positions but rarely had any call-backs. The reason why I'm desperate for a clinical position is b/c 1. I've worked for Rite Aid briefly and hated it, 2. I need intern hours to take Compounding, and 3. I believe it will only get harder to find a job as i progress further into pharmacy (I wouldn't stay as an intern for long).

I'm just wondering if I should just settle for retail positions or I'm just worrying too much.

Any suggestions/help would be very much appreciated =D

Can volunteer hours work towards intern hours?

If so, I would go work as a voluteer and show the DOP you're a hard worker willing to go the extra mile without getting paid....

Now that kind of effort will set you apart from the rest which will probably land you a job in the future.

According to one of my professors, you can't volunteer in retail, but you can at a hospital.

i am still confused.....what do you mean by "clinical internship".....do you mean like VALOR or something or do you mean like hospital tech?

Most hospitals seemed to have hired interns around March.
I think working where you can beats not working at all, so work Rite Aid until you find a clinical job. "Clinical" or hospital jobs are really hard to come by nowadays, especially in large cities.

^I mean like a hospital tech.

And yea, most hospitals hire their techs earlier. My school's pharmacy career fair is the latest in the metro area and most hospital reps I spoke to indicated that they've already interviewed a significant number of students.

Sigh, I guess I'll have to stick with retail for now, but at this point, its pretty hard to find a retail job.

Hey there!

I just finished my P1 year and I am in the same boat too. Keep a sharp eye out for hospitals. New York Presbyterian just filled an intern position like 2 weeks ago. Scout the web everyday. NYS requires such a ridiculous amount of hours to take compounding boards and the majority of places aren't hiring pharmacy interns or would even take them as volunteers (retail sector that is, not sure about hospitals). Next time, scout out intern positions about a month before your spring semester ends, so u can land something for the summer. I am learning the hard way this summer :help:

As for the NYS boards and the required intern hours, if you can, try another state. Looks like I will be doing that next summer.:scared:
