Pharmacy Tech problems

I had recently become certified as a Pharmacy tech back in November and thinking I finally found a job of a lifetime i've hit road blocks. It seems no one is hiring and if they are there either on the opposite side of town (San Antonio that is) or they looking for experinced techs. Should I just take up jobs literally 30 miles away from me, look for volenteer experince instead of work, or wateva just so i can land a job😕? Also how much does a pharmacy tech license help in the admissions process? Anyone with experince on these questions it would be greatly appreciated👍

30 miles is quite some distance. I would keep on trying at more convenient locations maybe even try some independent pharmacies. Volunteering looks really good, but I think you would get far better experience if you obtained a paid position with more responsibilities.

Pharmacy schools like to see you have experiences in the pharmacy work place. Nothing is more important than knowing what your getting yourself into by having experience. I definitely think it is a good thing to have on your application. Keep applying and try networking a bit too. A lot of the techs I know with no experience got their jobs through networking and meeting with pharmacy managers.

I would take the job that is 30 miles away.

That is significant only in small towns where 30 miles can mean you drive an hour to get to work. But around a big city like San Antonio, it shouldn't be much of a problem.

pharmacy tech license and job experience looks good on the applications but it is no replacement for good grades and PCAT scores.

Ya, experience is great for your app. I'd take that job. Keep applying for more local jobs as well though, and if its a chain, look into transferring. I work 30 miles away if its any consolation, but I used to be closer and moved further away. I used to be 3 miles away. If the drive is mostly freeway, it wouldn't be to bad

What an old coworker of mine did was she printed out about a dozen copies of her resume, dressed professional, and just walked into various pharmacies all around town. It's funny because at that point in time, my pharmacy was struggling because we had so much work! She walked in, and he said go upstairs and start working! Really random opportunity, but I figure now that I have over a year of tech experience, I may be able to go somewhere else faster!

Think about it, if the only local ones are hiring those with experience, then you need to get experience even if you have to drive 30 miles. Sometimes in order to get what you desire you have to encounter difficulty. Take the job and you can find something closer later.

I've had the pleasure of working for two REALLY good independent pharmacies. They are out there, you just gotta be lucky enough to find them. And they are massively better than working for a chain.

That's what I hear. Im the only pharmacy student he knows and were really good friends. He wants to partner up and buy another pharmacy with me. Hopefully that works out.

I'm having the same problem right now with finding a job. I've looked most places within a reasonable distance from where I am. I was talking with an adviser of mine and he told me try to volunteer until a job opens up but not to quit trying and just keep going back so that when they need someone they know you have been in before looking for a job.

Depending on what kind you are going to be in, it's great! I love making the prescriptions. But I work in a pharmacy that primarily deals with bio-identical hormones so we do just about the same few things every day, but you will learn a lot!

The good news is if you get hired with a chain, there's always a chance of transferring to a closer store at a later time. As far as driving 30 miles each way: experience is experience.

I admire your coworker because I was on that exact same thing for a while. I guess San Antonio is just a tougher crowd🙁

I thank yall for the encouragemnt. I took the advice and I manage to get a shadowing opportunity at a compound Pharmacy up in my part of town so there is an upside. However job search still in the pits though a friend told me a CVS is being built. I don't know if they work like most places and transfer in people or just straight hire but might as well try right?

Not to be the party pooper, but a lot of retail pharmacies don't consider being in a compounding pharmacy to be relatable experience. Yes you're in a pharmacy, but you're in a much different beast than retail

Our retail pharmacy does compounding, A LOT of it. I make shi* all the time. Its fun.
