aloha! all 😀 i'm a senior in highschool and i was just wondering if a BS in biochemistry, will be sufficient enough for pharmd acceptance or not? yeah, loooooong ways to go not to mention i already feel like a total dumb ass for asking  buuut, just making sure ^ ^ ooh and what would you best recommend to better my chances[double major/mba/?]. thanks everybody! :help::help::help:

biochemistry'll be fine.. you certainly dont need an MBA, hell you dont even need a bachelors degree. I just went to school to get my prereqs done and then went to pharmacy school from there, no degree. Probably 30% of my class doesnt have bachelors degrees. dont mind johnep34 , he's a smart alec sometimes

hey b[type b pharmd] ^ ^ how are you? and thanks! for actually answering my question[not like some people... or johnep34, to be exact :nono:]. oops! i ment MS[typo], and not! MBA =/ but, ANYWAY... so, now that you're in pharm school. if you could do it over again, how would you go about doing it? is there anything you would do differently? and in all honesty... would you recommend me following the same path as you did[prerequisites only then take a crack at pharm school]? i mean, i know it's the cheaper route instead of pursuing a BS, first. but, now that you're actually there, would you have rather gotten a degree first or not? by the way, speaking of degree? from what i understand the "pharmd", is a 6 year degree program right? so, what happens if you do not acquire a degree, after the first 2 years? oh and if you have enough credits, but no degree, are you still eligible for the next 4 years? or do you actually need a degree of some sort, in order to continue the next 4 years of "pharmd"? sorry i know i could find some of these answers in the FA-Q section =/ but, it just seems easier this way 😀

Most schools (most!) allow you to enter their 4-year pharmD program after completing ~2 years of pre-reqs. You enter with no degree (or an AS or AA), attend pharmacy school for 4 years, and graduate with a pharmD.

It seems to be the concensus on here that more and more schools look favorably on your having a BS or BA, but it's not required.

A degree in Biochem would probably cover all of your pre-reqs to get into any pharmacy school (though some pharmacy schools require A&P and other oddball courses you might not otherwise take)

I agree it is not required but I do have one thing to say. My gf's brother has a 3.4 gpa, B.S. in Chemistry, and 78 on his PCAT. He said that he wasn't confident enough in the interview and got waitlisted at UC pharmacy school. The interview is a very important part and if you do good in that part, then you are ready to go to pharmacy school.

hmm... this seems to be the norm.

not really[so cal, ohio state, florida, yada, yada, yada, etc.] ^ ^

hmm... sounds like he's a shy one eh? probably needs to get out! *more* [sorry!], to better them social skills and boost that confidence a bit. anyway... thanks! d 😀

Work on finishing the pre-reqs and other courses to finish a degree. You won't have to take many other courses that wouldn't be included in a science degree plan. Once you're going into the second year and will be able to finish the pre-reqs by the time you would enter a pharmacy school start putting in apps. I got in without a degree as well as a number of my classmates. Having a degree does help give you a leg up for admissions. But, if you get in without a degree, ultimately what's the difference?

oh, thanks! irish[irishrxman] ^ ^ hmm... i guess it just comes down to a high GPA and PCAT score eh =/ what's the difference? *haha* point taken. but, it depends what school right? because i know some that i'm interested in actually require a minimum BS upon entrance in pharmd[so cal, ohio state, florida, etc.]. but, anyway... thanks! again irish :luck:

hey! i had a question for you... okay! if i currently have ap biology and ap chemistry and graduate with a's in both subjects. would it even count as far as my college prereq's for pharm school? huh, i know i'm better off asking an advisor =/ but, just thought i'd ask you anyway 😀

Wow, I admire the certainty of your goals while still in highschool (not to mention your drive to pursue). I was probably filling my time with mindless thoughts at your age (valley girl voice: "like, oh mi gawd, like, my shoes TOTALLY match my car" ) Looks like you are on a much better path than i was 13yrs ago, good luck, mama!

Indeed, when I was Smokn's age, I was more interested in how to eck some more torque outta my first Mustang's 289 V8, not what I'd be doing for the rest of my life.

Much kudos!

hey sci ^ ^ aww, it aint so bad considering you'll be making more than enough soon to buy a few of those mustangs. then again... i'm almost certain your gonna settle for a shelby instead [see, i knew it! ^ ^], and kudos returned sci 😀

"...Pharmacists do it behind the counter..."

omg SCI! that is sooo perverted, yet terribly true... 🤣

Hey, you've never seen those license plate frames? Like, "Profession X does it Y" where Y is directly related in such a way to the profession that it's oddly humorous but also true? Like a double entendre. It was one of my very rare creative moments.

As far as money goes, I'm not counting any chickens before they've hatched.

oops! sorry sci, i did not know you replied so soon as i was a bit busy in a different thread, reading comments and educating myself at the same time :uhno: omg! i just realised that what i just said is actually a double entendre, right? :bang: oh well, i'm over it. anyway... no, i haven't seen that exact plate. but, i do know what you mean. especially! after finding out what a double entendre ment! as was unfamiliar with that phrase initially 😳

ooh, i'm sure it was eh? 😀

aww, it's okay... you can tell me? JUST KIDDING!!! SCI ^ ^

and i'm sure you'll hear pharmacists say this more than once, but drive your current car until it gets too old, and then you have saved enough money to buy a really nice car if you want - i heard this from an R.Ph. who has an MBA

i think my corolla is supposed to last me long enough to get through about 5 years after i graduate. the same pharmacist said that i should drive my car "until it blows up" and then buy a new one

Can anyone help me find the salary range for a poison control pharmacist.???? your reply is needed asap. Thanks

:wtf: wow and this coming from a "pharmacist", gee... thanks! :slap::troll:
...then why exactly did you pick this picture of yourself for your avatar? It certainly doesn't make you look mature (more like a typical high school girl), but at least you have a good idea of what you want to do.
I'd say biochem is the hardest of the degrees, and it is ideal for pharmacy school. There are plenty of other B.S. or B.A. degrees that would be just fine (or even an A.A. or A.S.), but if you want to be thoroughly challenged, then stick with the biochem. Good luck.

And yet, another: "Pharmacists do more than lick and stick" There's a top ten for pharmacists out there on the web, but I think it's more like top 13 haha!

ooh, i assure you it had NOTHING to do with my "twins", if that's what your getting at[kidding me?]. i just needed a picture to upload here and i really didn't want to use an old one[stored]. sooo, since my camera was infront of me. i took a random pic, of myself and that's the outcome... unfortunately =/ look, i can deal with all the boys will be boys bull ****. i mean, it's actually an everday reality for me, in that sense and it really doesn't matter WHAT i'm wearing[no boasting, just keeping it real]. BUT... i just expected better from HIM you know? that's all. anyway, it's water under the bridge now and i'll just leave it at that okay ^ ^

It certainly doesn't make you look mature (more like a typical high school girl)

yeah, i'm sure that's exactly what HE 🙄 thought too eh?

aww, thanks! biz ^ ^ i really appreciate that and best of luck to you also 😀

I've never seen so many smileys in my life...lol

But OP, a bit of advice from me...I'll be graduating with my BS in biochemistry next spring, along with a concentration in medicinal chemistry. You would think that would be a decent background for Pharm school right? Well there are only 3 schools that I'll have the pre-reqs for, so I'll be taking a couple classes next summer at CC before I apply.

The major did take care of MOST of the pre-reqs, but def look around at a few schools and make sure you get what you need. I certainly could have gotten everything done using my electives, but I didn't really think about Pharm school early enough (like you are!) and I ended up taking things like guitar instead of anatomy and physiology 😳

oh, i know ^ ^ heard it through the grape vine from one of the moderators[pharm b], already. aww, i'm SO envious, by the way[your BS in biochem] 😛

ooh, okay ^ ^ hey! so... what electives would you recommend me taking. i mean, now looking back. well, i know that prereq's differ slightly from school to school. but, what electives would you stress most, besides anatomy and physiology? or is that the only 2 prereq's NOT covered, under a biochem major? thanks! win 😀

I was under the impression that A&P was not an elective but a requirement prior to admission in pharmacy schools everywhere just like general bio, chem and ochem are. I could be wrong, but either way, take the A&P because you will need the solid foundation for what will come in pharmacy school.

It was not a requirement for my school, but it is safe to say that it is for most.
