when was the first pharmd program established? year? it seems as though older pharmacist do not have a pharmd degree. they're considered just a registered pharmacist.

The PharmD has been around longer then the bachelor's degree. It was first done in the late 1800s while the bachelor's was made in the 1920s. But, it wasn't anything like the modern PharmD. You could get a PharmD after a pharmacy bachelors since at least the 1960s. I know someone who did it at that time. The PharmD as an entry level degree came about in the 1990s at most schools. The last group of bachelors graduated just last year.

The first Pharm.D. program established was in 1950 in California. The first Pharmacy degree available (since the early days) was a Ph.G. or Graduate of Pharmacy degree which consisted of two 26 week long years. The next degree that was available was a Ph.C. or Pharmaceutical Chemist. This degree took two years to complete with each year consisting of 36 weeks. Before 1960 you could get a Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy- four years 36 weeks long. After 1960 they lengthened the requirements for a Bachelors of Pharmacy to 5 years each year consisting of 36 weeks. Currently, the only degree a graduate of Pharmacy can earn in the U.S. is the Pharm.D. (2004 is the last class to have the choice of Bachelors or Pharm.D.) which is a 6 years program.
