Where you might be getting confused is the tensor veli palatini is innervated by V3.
The levator veli palatini is innervated by the pharyngeal plexus primarily by cranial nerve X. The pharyngeal plexus is mostly comprised of CN's IX and X, with some motor fibers from CN XI.

V3 innervates the tensor veli palatini NOT the levator veli palatini. Spud gal was dead on about the nerves that make up the pharyngeal plexus but Levator gets it innervation from just X and XI.

Well, you guys are all correct. By any chance, is it Wheeler's you checked that said that the levator is by cn v?

Remember that both muscles with 'tensor' are innervated by CN V. A way I remember for the exams is to put it into a math equation:

2 (muscles) x 5(CN#V) = 10 (tensors)

Levator veli palatini: It is the 4th branchial arch derivative and is supplied by vagus nerve(CN X)
Tensor veli palatini: 1st branchial arch derivative; supplied by V3

Pharyngeal plexus is supplied by pharyngeal branch of vagus and glossopharyngeal nerve and motor component of XI
