My school offers a B.Phil degree, also known as a PhB. It is the same as a BSc with the additional requirement that you also have to do research, write a thesis, and defend it. Would medical schools look upon this favorably or would most be confused/not know what a PhB is? Most people I talked to have never heard of a PhB so I don't want adcoms to think it is not a legit degree and hold it against me if I decide to do it. I plan on applying to MD/PhD programs only if it matters. Any advice appreciated!

So... It's a "bachelor of philosophy" degree that sounds like "PhD" and is actually a post graduate degree? Is that right? That's just confusing.

If it is a post-grad degree, what is your bachelors in?

Ummm... Dude that's a BSc

PhB term sounds like nonsense because it is. Many schools' science faculties have a research requirement and then call your program 'honors'

By the way, I'm rocking a PhHS from my high school 😛

Med schools wouldn't care. Most majors don't matter with a small exception being especially hard ones (engineering). Even then, there is no excuse for a poor GPA. Worry about your GPA

It is not a post-graduate degree. It is indeed my bachelors degree. No one seems to have ever heard of a PhB degree haha. I don't want the adcoms to think I haven't done an undergraduate degree.

If that's the case then it may even be confusing to adcoms who have heard of the degree, because according to the link you just posted, it is a post graduate degree at most universities.

That's no reason not go for it though, if that's really what you want to do.

+1

Sounds more like a play on terminology. Both of my BS requires research, thesis, and defense. If that's the only distinguishing factor for your PhB, then the title may be just as shallow as B.A. vs A.B and so on..
