Hey guys,
im wondering when do you use the prefix "phenyl" vs "benzyl". i was going through destroyer, ( around # 64 and #65 2010 version) and they use the word "phenyl" to name the compound. im wondering why is it referred to as phenyl and not benzyl........aka when do u use which.....? thanks!!

Benzyl has an extra methyl.

hmmmm, so if theres a ch3 attached to the benzene ring then its benzyl? but if any other substituent (ie- a Chloride) is attached to the benzene, then its phenyl?

Benzyl alcohol:

i mean phenyl, not phenol. i know what a phenol is. i mean when naming a compound, when do u know to use benzyl or phenyl when they look the same....

bump

They don't.

Benzyl has an extra methyl group.

More obvious example (since you were confused by phenol vs phenyl alcohol):
