I think I should be eligible for this honors society at my school...UF...does anyone know much about it? I know it definitely looks good on your transcript...how does one join and are any posters here members?

I don't go to UF but I got elected for membership into Phi Beta Kappa sometime around my graduation date. I think they select you based on your GPA.

Oh, and to answer your question (sorry, I forgot what you were asking)...

You can't apply for membership. They invite you.

Yeah, they invite you, very few juniors get invites, then more seniors get invited. In the long run I don't think it actually means anything, other than you could list it on your CV if you really wanted to.

and since most of us won't be job-hunting with our resumes (hopefully), it isn't useful for very much - unless, of course, your obit in written up in the NY Times - the secretary of my local chapter was bragging that PBK is the only honor society that's mentioned there. yay 🙄 on the bright side, you do get to learn the cool secret handshake 😉

in terms of admissions - what i gather is they take everyone with a gpa of >3.8, look at their transcripts, and nominate those whose transcripts are sufficiently well-rounded (i.e., lots of humanities as well as sciences). and i think for juniors it has to be 3.9 or above. but if you really want more info, you could probably contact the person on your campus.

...unless your undergrad institution didn't have a chapter at the time you graduated, in which case they'll never consider you at all, not even when you get your graduate degree at an institution which does have a chapter. 🙁 😡 :meanie:
