Just trying to figure out if I'm being ripped off. 😉 Seems a tad bit fishy if you ask me... It's called Phi Eta Sigma and it has a one-time only fee of $50. It's officially called the Freshman Honor Society of Phi Eta Sigma. Their website is phietasigma.org if you want to check it out.

Anyway, anyone want to weigh in on whether I should cough up the cash and join the chapter at my school? If it look good on my application, I'm in! 😎 But I doubt it seeing as I am only a freshman and got a 3.86 last semester (not exactly stellar). Thanks!

I think there are other organizations that you could join that you would enjoy. I wouldn't just pay $50 so that you have something that looks good on your application.

Rip off. If you are hoping silly stuff like this will make you look good for medical school admissions, then you need to re-focus your efforts. Your goal should be to have more unique, active, and interesting honors that define you and allow you to show off. Also, your GPA speaks for itself, you do not need to pay these people to draw attention to it. In other words, they are not giving you anything an admissions committee cannot already see...

at my institution i believe that offer that to people with a 3.1 .... talk about not stellar!

it's just to make people feel good about themselves. it's worthless. i think it actually looks bad on a resume, but that's just my opinion.

I must have joined at least 10 of those things (no exaggeration) as an undergrad. I listed ZERO of them on my application.

I Eta Sigma once....just once.

thanks for the advice! i will definitely be passing on this one...
