Hello, first time posting but long-time reader had a few questions about Philly EM Programs - I'm a rising third year and a bit lost. I've been going through the EM resident forum, and didnt get much guidance, and isnt that forum for residents and not medical students?

About me - I'm a hard worker and want to go to a competitive residency program where I can also be laid back and learn. I'm married and my wife is a teacher and flexible. I'm open with any program and want to be well trained.

Overall everyone I've spoken with and the forum here seems to suggest that Christaina is the strongest/most competitive program in the area.

I spoke with my fourth years, most of which have rotated there recently or will be rotating there in the near future, and most of the people I spoke with keep said it's an intense place to work, residents while happy are intense, and half the people have a military background and run the residents like a base.

That doesnt seem laid back, I could have joined the military when I was in college and avoided it because I dont need that element in it.

Are all EM programs like that or unique to higher-tier programs?

Thoughts?

Torn between anesthesia and EM and looking at Philly, Boston, and NYC. Interested in this too.

Feel free to post a question about the various Philly EM residencies over in the EM forum. You can also search for any of the specific residencies. Most, if not all will have review threads.

My personal info is >10 years old but I have to give a nod to my med school alma mater Temple. Great program, great faculty, great PD, great pathology/bad neighborhood.

I was also really impressed with Einstein's program. Same pathology and neighborhood, great faculty. It started out as an osteo only program but has been dual for years. If you are a DO or looking for a 4 year program or just want a great inner city EM experience it will work for you.

Don't worry so much about what others say is the best.
Try to spend some time at the programs that interest you.

Christiana and Temple are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but are both excellent.
Depends what you want out of your training.

Think about your career goals, where you'd like to practice, what kind of off-service rotations you want, etc.

It's more about finding the best fit for you.
I know residents and students who have rotated at all these places.

It's funny how 2 different people can experience the same place and have such a different impression. One person may rank a place #1, another may not even put it on their rank list.

Try to get out of the pre-med mentality of thinking you need to get into the "best" program. Just find what is best for you.

One other thought. I found that most of the reviews of programs are next to worthless. They are written either by people who only interviewed at a place or residents at the program. The former have little info on which to write a review, the latter are obviously biased. Just pick a couple of spots and try to do aways. That will give you the best insight into a program.
