I pulled up that link for the certification. Question is, which heading am i supposed to try and do? I'm trying to get the certification to have the job instead of EMT or something else for clinical experience + $ while i'm in school...

editing: Don't know how to do the title... but also... I'm thinking bout switching my religion minor into a major. Would having one science and a humanities major say anything on a transcript? I know majors aren't that important.

and... if I do an off-year for a research job, does having a bio vs. chem. biochem vs. some other BS major matter or is it the fact that it's BS? Job postings normally have like "looking for _________ majors"

Umm... ASCP is the most respected among the certifications. They have four tracks to getting certified, two of which are classroom for phlebotomy, one is work experience, and one is training for another program (such as RN, LPN, MA, etc) that includes phlebotomy training.

If you're looking to get certified and you haven't taken a class yet, that's probably your best bet. Most community colleges have a phlebotomy program that you can go through (1-2 semesters, one class per semester), then you just have to fill out the paperwork and take a test to be certified.

I did "Look for schools" but there's not 1 in my state??? Should I just ask my school???

If you don't mind me asking, which state do you live in? Im a phlebotomist and I got my certification from Florida Medical Training Institute and then my national from the ASCP. The ASCP is a very good resource to look for schools in your area or state. You could call them up and see if there are any schools in your state that offer a phlebotomy program. Some plasma donation places (in florida anyway) do on the job training for phlebotomy. You can get the certification to work at the plasma donation center only. However, as far as I know this is only for florida and I am not sure how plasma donation places work in your state. You can try to call up a plasma donation center or a lab center like Quest Diagnostics or Lab Corp and see if they can direct you to a school or place that offers a phlebotomy certification program.

Good Luck!! :luck:

Pet peeve of mine. If you're not asking a question, don't use question marks. Also, I never said 'look for schools', so quoting it like I did... not cool.

If you go to a regular 4-year institution, your school probably isn't going to help you out too much (there are some exceptions, like Montana). They don't train based on technical skills, so you should look at a community or technical college that does. Take a look at 'medical institutes' as well... they tend to be more expensive, but they do provide the training.

Barring all that, there are 8-hour training programs that you could do. The problem there is that you leave the program with virtually no experience, and you can't use it to get certified, so you're hardly ahead of where you started.

You can also go through a blood bank (like Bonfils, the Red Cross) to see if they'll train you for donor phlebotomy. It's not that difficult to make the switch from donor to hospital.

I'm a medical student from NY and i'm preparing for my phlebotomy certification exam, but couldn't find proper guides for preparation, I found few, for instance this phlebotomy certification guide, but the information given there is not adequate.

I would appreciate if someone can guide me to proper resources for preparing my examination.

Thank you,
Regards,
Johan Watson
