I've been lurking for a long time, and I always come across people doing EMT or Phlebotomy courses to help with clinical experience. I've been wanting to do a Phlebotomy course for the longest time, but my problem is that I really don't know how to go about it or what the program entails.

I was wondering if anyone with experience in a program like this could give me some basic advice on how long this would take and what is expected from me (hours, working time, ect.). I am currently a full-time student (barely have time to eat dinner as it is) but I would be willing to make more sacrifices if it was honestly worth it.

Thanks in advance! 😳

Hi, there,

This type of certification course is most likely found at your community college. Start there. When I searched mine, I found that it was a 90 hour class (approx. 22 sessions). According to the document: "Special requirements include Hepatitis B immunization, negative tuberculosis test, and blood test to check immunity status: Varicella Zoster IgG Ab; Rubella IgG Ab; Rubeola IgG Ab; Mumps IgG Ab; and criminal background checks."

The class prepares you for certification from ASCP.

If you know of a hospital, or clinic, that you might like to work with, it's possible you will be able to negotiate on the job training with them. Check with their human resource office. Ask what requirements/pre-reqs they are looking for, if you wish to pursue this more direct avenue.

I have been working in a hospital for the past 7 months as a phlebotomist and did not take the course. If you can, try and find a hospital that will give you on the job training.

Hi!
I really enjoy phlebotomy and highly recommend it as a way to get some great clinical experience! The course I took was about 12 weeks long, and at the end I was eligible to take the NCCT certification exam. I learned a lot, but the course was aimed at people with no more than a high school education, so the pace was pretty slow and I felt like there was a lot of wasted time. It just wasn't the academically rigorous setting that I've been used to. You might be luckier than I was, though! In any case, I wouldn't recommend doing it on top of a full course load. You do have to put in at least class time (my classes were from 9-2 two days a week), plus travel time (which for me was about 30-40 minutes each way -- you could be luckier). There were exams in class, but I didn't study too much. All my exams were multiple choice, and if you'll probably find them easy after Orgo, etc 🙂. Just as far as the time it takes from your schedule, though, you might be able to handle it with only 3 other courses going on. Or maybe over the summer, better yet!
As far as finding a program, it's probably easier if you live in a big city. I live in Chicago and there were several programs to choose from. I found these programs from doing a Google search for "phlebotomy course chicago" or something similar. You get the phone number, call and ask when the next phlebotomy course starts, how long it is, what it costs, etc. I chose my program based on its accessibility via public transportation.
Anyway, hope this helps! PM me if you have any other questions! 😀

Good advice. Phelbotomy training requirements vary radically from state to state, so comments you will get here may not be all that applicable for your situation...

I got my training on-the-job as well. As a tech, they made me stay in the lab for a two days to get my 50 sticks, and sent me on my way. They [management] also mentioned something about taking a national exam after a years experience? I never did, however.

anyone have any idea about the phlebotomy programs around detroit? like which cc/hospitals offer the training?

Thanks for the replies everyone, everything was very helpful! 😳 I actually started looking into my community college's phlebotomy courses, and it looks like the course might just take a summer. If it's so I will be willing to spend this upcoming summer doing that, and I will also have some extra time to work on my volunteering and what not.

I will be contacting them tomorrow to get more information. I really hope this works out 😳

Medtexx dot com. This is the company we used for phlebotomy certification for the medical assts in my office. It was a weekend course that requires some sort of medical background. IF you don't have the background, the cc might be better for you. But if you have a background in the hospital environment or a drs ofc, this might work for you.

I was highly pleased with the impact on our assts.

:luck:
