Hi. I'm going to get professional photos taken of me. What size should they be for AMCAS? I've tried looking on SDN search, the AMCAS website, and my MSAR book. Thanks.

AMCAS doesn't require it, that's why you can't find anything.
2ºs, and the MCAT require a passport size (2"x2") photo. A professional photo seems superfluous, but hey, everyone likes to feel pretty sometimes.

Go with the 8 by 10 glossy -- it will make a nice cover for your app. (actually I don't think you submit a photo with amcas, just certain secondaries that request one).

I'd totally recommend having a friend take a picture with a digital camera, and then printing it out at your local photo kiosk (Sam's, CVS, etc.). Waaaay cheaper. And I think I went with a 2"x3" or so.

totally agree there is plenty of money to be spent on this process elsewhere, snap a pic and print soem out, GW MCW wanted one so did some others I applied to did as well

Taking a photo with a digital camera is the best and cheapest way to go. Certain places like MCW and SLU wants you to upload the photos so you don't even have to print them.

But a word of advice about digital photos. Make sure you have decent lighting all around otherwise the flash makes for one hell of an unappealing photo and also be aware of the size requirements. I made the size mistake with the MCW photo and it came out hideous.

me too I looked like a gnarled old bulldog

Most places want a 2x2 pic. I would definetly go with a digital camera picture printed out at your local target, walgreens, etc. It cost me like 6 bucks total for all the pics I sent out.

I went to one of those photo booths in the mall. where you put in $3 and it snaps 4 pictures and out they come. yay, cheap. although people looked at me funny as if to ask... why are yougoing in there alone? I would avoid glamour shots 🙂

I just sent them a picture of me from a porno film I did. It was a nice, excited look.

LOL

Don't forget to photoshop the blemishes and teenage acne off. Also any premature wrinkles, or man moustache on women can be taken care of with good old photoshop.

Look older - younger - prettier whatever. Photoshop is the answer!

BTW I agree with the above poster about the 8x10 glossy (don't do the matte that is just lame).

Before you send the pic in, please remember to post it here for our admiration (& enjoyment).

Plus with photoshop you can make yourself seem more interesting. Put yourself on the grassy knoll in the Zapruder film, or putting Nazi's on trial at Nuerenberg, standing with three ex presidents, floating around in the space shuttle, or seated atop the Berlin wall as it is being torn down. Your opportunities to subtly bolster your credentials in a photo is limitless. It is worth 1000 words, which is a lot of extra characters on AMCAS.

I like the first pre-med on mt everest idea holding a flag with the school name of the school you're applying to.

There is a dedicated boy.

Or if instead of photoshop you prefer an au natural approach, how about a picture with nothing buy a tie on. If you're a hot chic wanting to do this and need someone to snap a shot - PM me for assistance and sexpert...oops expert tips. 😍

There is the risk that an inteviewer may be a mountain climber and may ask you about that in an interview. There is virtually no risk that the interviewer will have been in space, or at a presidential state dinner, or at the Kennedy assasination, so you will be safe in your lies.

On a more serious note with the photoshopping...

Try using the saturate/desaturate tools to make things looks nicer and to give the picture an overall warmer feeling.

Also, the burn tool is a nice one to define certain nice characteristics (eyelashes, eyebrows, etc.)

If you want some help with photoshop, let me know, I could probably make any high resolution picture look much better.

Actually a physician I shadowed said there was an astronaut in her class.

Anyone seriously considering Photoshop should consider the ethical implications. Contrast, balance and such is one thing but don't go crazy with it. Besides, what if they like your man mustache? 😱 😀
