Hey everyone,

I am a former chemical engineering student preparing for med school.

I have taken a year's worth (two semesters) of physical chemistry in undergrad.
(plus a semester of biochemistry with lab component, fluid mechanics, and etc)

Would this fulfill the general chemistry prerequisite or should I take General Chemistry I and II?

I'm an engineer and I went to a school that only has 1 semester of gen chem (some combined class), so I was forced to take physical chemistry to satisfy the second semester requirement.

So, yes. The biochem helps too if you classify it as chemistry. You might need to take two semesters of lab if you haven't already.

Isn't general chemistry usually a prerequisite to take p-chem? At least at my school it was.

You have a good question. I don't know the answer but my guess is you would still need to take gen chem. I guess you can call med schools and ask them if p-chem would count, but I doubt it would.

I took AP Chem in high school so I got credit for it in college ... hence i started with orgo in college (followed by biochem, physical chem, inorganic chem, etc)

I used my physical chemistry courses to fulfill my chemistry premed requirement (and used physical chem lab 1 & 2 to fullfil my chem lab requirement)

Med school didn't care. It's the equivalent of satisfying your "general math" requirement by taking multivariable analysis course instead of college algebra or Calculus - it's overkill but acceptable
