I was talking to one of my friend's parents who recently applied and got accepted to medical school (about 4 years ago) and they mentioned that their son had to get a pretty thorough physical wellness exam/drug tests/etc. when they applied to medical school, but I haven't heard any guidance counselors or friends mention this more recently when talking about the steps needed to apply.

Was this a part of the process that changed or do I not need to worry about it until I (hopefully!) get accepted? TIA!

I did one as part of the matriculation requirements but I haven't heard of needing one as part of the application process.

To apply? No. To matriculate, every school has its own requirements. I didn’t need a drug screen.. but PE, vaccines, titers and everything, yes.

Wait until you get accepted to worry about it. Every school doesn't require an exam. Probably all of them do require evidence of vaccination, very-recent TB test, and titers.
