In order to take the boards for physical therapy in california, do you need to go to a doctor of physical therapy program, or just have a masters in physical therapy?

Most, if not all, Masters programs in California are being phased out.

But to the OP, as far as I know, as long as you have completed an accredited PT program (Masters or Doctorate), you can take the boards in any state. This may change in the future as MPT programs get phased out. Check the California's PT Association website to be sure.
