Does anybody within this forum (this applies to the general public as well) have any acute knowledge of Physical Therapy programs within the state of Texas? Reason being is I have been pushing myself into making an establishment within the PT field due to its great demands and I am quite influenced with sports med and injury rehabilitation, and in order to maintain a cost-effective educational resource, I would have to stay here and apply to PT programs in Texas.

Of all the PT schools sprinkled around the nation, the following 12 schools are in Texas:
1. Angelo State University
2. Hardin-Simmons University
3. Texas State University- San Marcos
4. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
5. Texas Women's University at Dallas Presbyterian Campus
6. Texas Women's University at Houston Campus
7. University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences
8. University of Health Science Center at San Antonio
9. University of Texas at El Paso
10. University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
11. University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas
12. US Army-Baylor University

I am currently a junior level student attempting to achieve a 4-year degree (will apply to a few of the schools listed above) and then moving on from there. Can anyone help me decide which one is: cost-effective (cheap but good), good passing rate/positive outome, etc.
I know that many programs have high passing rates and such, but which do you think will be best to apply? My chosen spots would be both St. Augustine and UT Southwestern at Dallas.

Thoughts? 😕

make sure you have a gpa of 3.5, apply early, and have a variety of shadowing/work experience in a pt setting. depending on the school you will need at least one maybe two letters from PT. i know galveston, southwestern and twu require two. and apply early.

if you're looking at cost effective then dont do private universities like st. augustine or UIW.

you left a couple schools off the list there. UNT is about to get accredited. and UIW is the only school in texas to use the PTCAS system.

although they say its not required, i suggest finishing all the pre req before applying.

Oh, I have not heard about UNT and UIW getting into this. Hm, two more to look into.

St. Augustine was just one that is located near my family (San Antonio), but I've read some reviews from some folks about USA......majority of it were ranging from neutral to negative. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna cross it off my list.

At this point, I carry a 3.75 (out of a 4.0 scale) and have been volunteering/observing at a local therapeutics location. They will be relocating in order to expand their business and will soon work under them. So far, I have been keeping a checklist to make sure I am getting the necessary things done.

Will it negate my application ability if not all the necessary pre-reqs were not completed?
Thanks for the help rltruong

completing all the pre req courses before applying will just make you seem like a better candidate. this year most schools received over 500 applicants and UTHSCSA only interviews 100, UTMB interviews 150, texas tech interviews two groups in the fall and the rest in the spring.

San Angelo has a scholarship available (it's awarded on a GPA/GRE point system I think...) that could knock off a good chunk from their already reasonable tuition. This might make it one of the better deals that you can find in the Lone Star State (aside from Baylor, if you're considering that route). Looks like it's a 3.5 hour drive from San Antonio. Not sure how that factors into your thinking.

Low tuition, possible scholarship, low cost of living, low student/teacher ratio and a 98% pass rate. Plus I've been impressed by my brief interactions with the folks there. Kind and professional. So even though I don't see it mentioned much when people are talking about Texas PT programs, I think it's worth considering.

Here's a quick overview:

Yes, ASU certainly is that. In fact, I took a tour there and learn some stuff with my two of my friends who are currently attending there, too bad I wasn't there with them as an undergraduate student.

For those who are already in a PT/DPT/whatever program, I actually have a question that's been nudging me for a while now......how was/is the GRE testing? It also kind of confuses me when it has a verbal exam, but what exactly is it we're to do? Talk? Haha.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

It says on Texas States website that they will inform applicants as to whether they will be interviewed or not by Nov. 23. Has anyone heard anything yet?

St Augustine building just got finished, it's in a high class residential neighborhood way south of Austin but off of a major highway so it's not too inconvenient EXCEPT you will not be able to commute. Austin commute is HORRIBLE. Affordable apartments around St Augustine maybe hard to come by. Theyre abundant on the east side but sketchy.

There are so many public schools in Texas I would try the public schools first. I am going to apply to UNT because I have family on that side of DFW. I Heard its a decent program with good digs according to this vid from their inaugural class http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWzO1T0OqDU

Somebody mentioned a fact that UNT's DPT application does not require a submission of one's GRE scores. Can anyone confirm this? I've surfed the web and UNT's website, but I guess I just cannot locate it myself...

UNT doesnt require a GRE score, neither does Texas tech and UTHSCSA says they dont use it as part of the application but require u to send one in. Their program is very new. first graduating class is this spring so their accreditation wont be complete till then.

Anybody here have any formal experiences with the recently established DPT program at UNT in Denton, TX? Just want to get a better insight other than the general "About Us" and campus tours around there. What's the atmosphere like? The professors manage things just fine or just plain rude? Just anything is fine, I'll learn more as I discuss with the school rep from there
