Physician only R positions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those are pretty coveted positions for folks in general, SOAP or not, as they save having to repeat intern year.

But think of how good of an intern you'll be the second time around!

Very competitive. Last year there were only 100 total “R” spots compared to 1200 “C” and 400 “A”. Looks like there were only 14 open in the SOAP last year, and you’ll be up against some steep competition from those who didn’t match in surgical sub specialties with relatively high stats (having no clue what yours are).

Plus, the rules are a little different/fuzzy for “R” spots - some programs may opt to not fill if they choose not to (at my program, we preferred to reserve them for physician-scientist MD/PHD types or military grads as it’s a different residency track altogether...), so the actual programs truly open may be quite limited.

I am assuming, of course, that you are completing or have already completed a PGY-1 year or you wouldn’t be eligible at all.
