So, a thought just came through my mind. I notice that a lot of prior military docs work in the VA or military medical center as GS employees. However, if you put in 20 years and secure that healthcare for life and retirement pension, why would you not work as a contractor instead given the higher pay?
By having contracting income, you can make a SEP IRA allowing you to stash 50K. In addition, you can still stash another 17.5 K in a TSP account. Then, you can stash another 5K in a regular IRA. It makes too much sense.
Finally, nowadays, a family practice physician makes another 180-200k/yr. If you are a contractor FP physician for the DOD, what's the expected salary?
