I've been reading up on two anesthesiologist D.O.s I'm going to shadow and I noticed that both of them did two residencies (one did an internship, as well)--with their first residency in internal med. Now, I know it obviously takes significantly more time to specialize, but I am wondering how this all works in with the match (and interpreting the match lists I've seen). If you match into anesthesiology (or any other specialty) is it implied that you will do a residency in internal med and then a residency/fellowship in your specialty? Also, can physicians matched into internal med be 're-matched' into a specialty--and if so do they go through the entire match process again with new grads? These are obviously questions I can ask the physicians I'm going to shadow, but I'm full of questions and would rather not waste time on "easy questions" 😳

Anesthesia is a 3 year residency that requires either a pre-lim or internship year. Some Anesthesia residencies incorporate the PG-1 year into the program for a 4-year program while other do not. This being the case, some Anesthesiologists may have done their PG-1 in IM or as a TRI. I had the same question for an anesthesiologist mentor of mine who helped to clear it up. Hope this helps.

Also some people decide to "switch" careers after find a residency as well. These are usually institution based and funded as you can't use federal dollars to complete a 2nd residency (under my interpretation of residency programs).
