Physics Junior Year = Okay?

It is do-able, but know that you'll have to take the MCAT while you're in physics 2 so that you can get your application in the summer between your junior & senior years. Still do-able, though. 🙂

take it earlier. you might not reach topics like waves and optics and nuclear physics which are at the end of physics ii.

take physics as a sophomore, tough it out, and over the summer practice a lot and then take it in april. you'll be more prepped.

physics isn't as much memorization as problem-solving which is a good thing in mah book.

It's really not a problem to take the MCAT while you're still in physics II, you'll just have to review the stuff you haven't covered yet. I haven't taken physics II yet (I graduated last May and only needed 1 semester for what I was previously doing), but it isn't hurting me on my practice tests (actually currently having more trouble with gchem, which I took 2 semesters of!). We'll see in a week. In any case it's very common to take the MCAT while still taking some of the pre-reqs. If you think you will do better in orgo and physio without having to worry about physics too, don't bother to take them all together.

Hi people.

So I've seen in a few posts recently about taking physics your sophomore year. I was originally planning on taking them junior year, and occupying myself with orgo and animal physiology my sophomore year. Has anybody tried taking physics junior year, and taking the MCATs in April? If so, is it a road that you think it's fine, or do you recommend taking it earlier? Thanks.

I took physics my junior year, physics 1 in the fall and physics 2 in the spring. I took the April MCAT that spring of physics 2 as well. I had no problems doing this, you cover almost everything before the MCAT so there's no gaping hole.

I found the best way is to study MCAT physics separately from your physics class, and don't think that since you're taking the class concurrently with studying for MCATs that they will just nicely overlap.

Also, take Hermit MMood's advice with a grain of salt. Although he talks the talk, he has not walked the walk. He is in highschool and has no real experience taking any college class while studying for the MCAT, I just wanted to inform you.

EDIT: Good luck tigress!

I dont think its a problem to take physics your junior year. I'm taking Physics II now and I will be taking the MCAT this saturday and I feel very prepared. In fact UT-Austins health professions office recommends taking physics during your junior year.

sitraacha also has a 3.0 gpa and is currently getting a C in physics right now. He has also a sociology major and is currently going to Hudson Valley Community College.

And i have already taken physics already so I talk the talk. So take the advice the flamer/troll sitraacha gives you with a grain of salt.

Sitraacha is the type of person who can never be a doctor for he cannot bear the fact that people younger than him are accomplishing more than he can even care to do. That said, I'll be having the final laugh when you don't get into med. school, because we don't need arrogant idiots like yourself telling other people they are stupid.

pretty much everyone at my college (Baylor University) took physics their junior year.....

You know, I think everybody pretty much agrees with Sitra Achra on this, we just aren't speaking up as much. Look at the advice you gave compared to all of us who have been through it, and you'll notice that it's the exact opposite. Almost everybody I know who took the MCAT took it while still in physics; that seems to be the most common route, and it works fine. You have a right to your opinions, but when it comes to things like this, you just don't really have any basis for them. You need to not call people names for pointing out this deficiency.

Ok ok ok... lets just settle down little kid.

1. My GPA is fine. Meaning 3.4 and I'm fine with it.
2. I made an A in physics when I took the MCAT.
3. Not that major matters, which shows how little you know, but I'm a biology major.
4. I go to The University of Texas at Austin - recognize that name?
5. You have taken AP physics in highschool, taught by someone who lacks a PhD, unlike the person who taught me physics and has been nominated for a nobel prize 6 times.
6. I am on a med school waitlist right now, which means I have interviewed and was not rejected. That means I am good enough to be a doctor and if I don't get in this time, I will re-apply early and get in next time.
7. Your little outburst just nullified any previous maturity-feigning posts you made, as we all see who you are in broad daylight as of now.

I'd like to say that Sitra Achra is making a big deal over my age, seeing that 1) he's lying over the fact that I have no college experience. would you say the same about a student in europe who has taken these classes in high school?

I've taken physics and i was making a suggestion. Of course physics is doable junior year. I also think that its better to take physics sophomore year so to have more background and time to get acquainted with the physics material on the mcat.

In all my posts, show me where i am wrong or where my advice is bad. Furthermore, you cannot take into account the legitimacy of people online as many of these people are anonymous and you cannot take their word for it. I have made a point that I am a high school senior yet i get bashed by flamers like sitra achra even though i will be entering college in less than 5 months.

I suppose that when i become a college freshmen i will be allowed to give advice only gurus may tell.

sitra achra needs to get his facts straight before saying i do not have any experience for I've had plenty of experience in the college academia.

Edit: Wow, as if general physics needs a person with a PHD to teach it! ha ha ha. wow. and to call me a "little kid" is pretty pathetic. Hide behind your computer punk, you're just jealous that the stuff i say is relevant and normal.

OK. I'm not flaming you. I don't know why you are taking things so personally, seeing as I haven't verbally abused you or called you stupid. I am sure you are a bright individual.

However - I don't know who duped you into thinking that any class taught in a highschool is the same as one taught at a decent university. Yes, the material might be the same, but you are also giving advice on what classes to take while studying for the MCAT. It is disingenuous for you to give advice on things like this without warning the reader that you haven't yourself done it.

I agree that in certain situations, you are more than fit to give advice. But you seem to enjoy the sound of your own voice...or keyboard. It is annoying to those of us who have experienced this situation, and uniformly disagree with you.

Again - I have no intent of "flaming you." I have never insulted you and keep my comments civil.

Take Physics II during fall, and Physics I during the spring semester. You'll cover all of the Physics II topics, plus when you're wasting class time doing newtonian mechanics (which EVERYONE should know before starting the class anyways), you can study the topics later in the semester. It's definitely better than missing the difficult Physics II topics before the MCAT. Plus MCAT studying is easier. 👍

"Hide behind your computer punk"?

I think your maturity level was just diagnosed by your internet message board threats. When I was a senior in high school I was banging the prom queen, not posting on a pre-med message board for ego boosts. Either live the life you have now, or grow up.

I took both physics semester my junior year and was fine. Is summer school for one semester an option?

I took physics my Jr. year but ended up waiting another year for the MCAT anyways

I took physics my freshman spring semester and sophomore fall semester. Great choice, because then I took the MCAT in August after my sophomore year (I probably could've even done it in April, but I was relaxing that semester).

What about being a second year and have taken no physics....Signing up for an MCAT class, and trying to take the MCAT this august?? How much physics is on the MCAT and will a class teach you enough of the basics to get by? I don't want to have the pressure of just taking the MCAT once (April of Junior year).

Bad idea. Unfortunately, physics is one of those subjects that most people need to have some structured classes in. I'm a TA for Physics 1&2 and I have yet to see anyone I would recommend taking the MCAT before taking physics to. Biology, not a problem, but physics would probably be.

The ONLY way I could see this happening is if you had a really good high school physics course, and feel confident enough about the basics that you would be able to learn the material over the summer. If you don't have a good physics background, though, I would recommend waiting to take the MCAT. I know some people do it by taking a course like TPR with lots of classroom hours, but for the MCAT you really want to already know the material and focus more on reviewing and practicing it.

Also, if you take the MCAT in April of your junior year you still have the option of re-taking in August. That takes a lot of pressure off. Sure taking it in August isn't the best idea in the world, but plenty of people pull it off successfully. If I were you I would focus more on getting the pre-reqs at least mostly done before you take the MCAT, because you don't want to mess up and have a poor score that doesn't really represent your ability.
